Martial artists demand action as transgender athletes excel in women’s grappling event.
Martial Artists Outraged as Transgender Athletes Dominate Female Competition
Martial artists across Georgia were left in shock and anger when a pair of transgender athletes completely dominated the female division in a recent grappling tournament. Corissa Griffith, a biological male identifying as female, walked away with an impressive four gold medals at the Georgia Grappling and BJJ Championship on October 21. Not far behind, Cordelia Gregory, another biological male identifying as female, also claimed first and second-place medals, according to reports.
The controversy escalated as multiple female martial artists refused to compete against the transgender athletes, fearing for their own safety. They were not informed beforehand that they would be facing transgender women in the competition.
Unprepared for the Unexpected
Jayden Alexander, a martial artist from the North American Grappling Association, was scheduled to compete against one of the transgender athletes. “I honestly never thought this would actually happen in a contact sport, especially not my contact sport,” expressed the Brazilian jiujitsu blue belt. “When I saw him, I was so shocked I didn’t know how to respond.”
Ansleigh Wilk, a Brazilian jiujitsu brown belt and coach, quickly realized that she couldn’t rely on her usual techniques against the transgender athletes. “I realized very quickly I couldn’t muscle them like most girls,” she admitted. ”Well obviously, because it wasn’t a girl. Then not long after, I had to do a second match of which Cordelia threw a tantrum saying [Gregory] ‘didn’t tap [out].’ I was sincerely scared [Gregory] was going to punch me when I stuck my hand out to shake [Gregory’s].”
NAGA Faces Criticism and Implements Policy Change
The Georgia Grappling and BJJ Championship, which falls under the North American Grappling Association (NAGA), has faced backlash for facilitating matches between men and women. Initially, NAGA stated that they did not require biological women to compete against transgender women and allowed them to choose whether to participate in a division with other biological women. However, following the mass outrage surrounding the October 21 tournament, NAGA implemented a policy change on October 28 that now prohibits transgender women from competing in female divisions.
“We, as an organization, strive to ensure fairness, inclusivity, and respect for all competitors within our events. With regards to transgender females competing in NAGA, the following policy shall be implemented,” the statement from NAGA read. “Transgender females must compete in the men’s division. We hope that the simplicity of this revised policy will help to avoid any future occurrences where transgender females enter women divisions. If NAGA staff is informed that a transgender female is in a women’s division, they will be given the choice to go to the men’s division or given a refund.”
It remains to be seen how this policy change will impact future competitions and the ongoing debate surrounding transgender athletes in sports.

Why do critics argue that allowing biologically male individuals to compete against females in martial arts competitions undermines fairness and creates an unfair playing field?
Zilian jiu-jitsu purple belt, also spoke out about her experience competing against a transgender athlete in the tournament. “I train hard and dedicate so much time to my sport, and it’s disheartening to see all of that work go to waste when faced with an opponent who was clearly biologically advantaged,” Wilk lamented.
This sentiment of feeling unprepared and disadvantaged was echoed by many female martial artists who found themselves pitted against transgender opponents. They argued that no matter how skilled they were, the physical differences between biological males and females give the former an inherent advantage in combat sports.
A Matter of Fairness and Safety
The dominance of transgender athletes in female martial arts competitions raises important questions surrounding fairness and safety. Critics argue that allowing biologically male individuals to compete against females undermines the spirit of competition and creates an unfair playing field.
This sentiment is not limited to martial arts alone. Controversies surrounding transgender athletes competing in women’s sports have been on the rise in recent years, with various sporting organizations, such as the International Olympic Committee, having to establish guidelines regarding transgender participation.
Proponents of transgender athlete inclusion argue that everyone should be allowed to participate in sports regardless of their gender identity. They assert that excluding transgender individuals from female competitions is discriminatory and goes against principles of inclusion and equality.
However, opponents raise valid concerns about physical differences between biological males and females. Testosterone levels, muscle mass, and bone density give biological males inherent advantages in terms of strength, speed, and overall physicality. These physical advantages can potentially put female athletes at a disadvantage and compromise their safety during competitions.
Seeking a Solution
The issue of transgender individuals participating in female martial arts competitions is a complex one that requires careful consideration and dialogue. Striking a balance between inclusivity and fairness is crucial for the future of combat sports.
Some suggest implementing policies that take into account the testosterone levels of transgender athletes. For example, setting an upper limit for testosterone levels to ensure a more level playing field. Additionally, creating separate divisions for transgender athletes could be an option, allowing them to compete against each other, while still maintaining opportunities for both transgender and cisgender athletes.
Dialogue among all stakeholders, including athletes, sporting organizations, and medical professionals, is essential in determining the best way forward. Policies and guidelines need to be established that prioritize fairness, safety, and the integrity of the sport.
Conclusion
The recent dominance of transgender athletes in female martial arts competitions has sparked outrage and ignited important conversations about fairness, safety, and inclusion. While recognizing the rights of transgender individuals to participate in sports, it is also crucial to consider the physical advantages that biological males may have over females in combat sports.
Finding a solution that strikes a balance between inclusivity and fairness is necessary to ensure the integrity of female martial arts competitions. Open and respectful dialogue among all stakeholders is essential in finding a way forward that respects the rights of all athletes while also maintaining a level playing field.
