Mary Lou Retton speaks out amidst health struggles.
Olympic Gymnast Mary Lou Retton Breaks Her Silence After Life-Threatening Health Battle
Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton has finally spoken out about her ongoing health battle. After spending weeks in the intensive care unit fighting a rare form of pneumonia, Retton has returned home and shared her gratitude for the support she has received.
In a heartfelt statement posted on Instagram, the 55-year-old gymnast expressed her appreciation for the outpouring of love and support from people all over the world. It was Retton’s daughter, McKenna Kelley, who first revealed her mother’s critical condition and asked for help covering the medical expenses since Retton doesn’t have health insurance. A fundraiser on SpotFund has raised over $455,000, surpassing its initial goal of $50,000.

Retton expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to make this statement and thanked everyone for their love and support. She remains positive as she continues her slow recovery process with her family by her side.
While Retton appreciates the respect for her privacy during this time, she plans to share more information about her health issues in the future, hoping to inspire and help others facing similar battles.
This statement comes after Kelley’s previous update on October 23, where she announced that her mother was finally home and in recovery mode. The road to recovery is still long, but the family is overwhelmed by the love and support they have received.
Retton’s progress has been remarkable, with prayers being felt and answered. Although she remains in the ICU, her breathing is becoming stronger, and her reliance on machines is diminishing.
In 1984, Retton made history at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles as the first American woman to win an individual all-around gold medal. Her incredible achievement led to her being named “Sportswoman of the Year” by Sports Illustrated magazine and even gracing the cover of the Wheaties box.
