Cellphone service outages reported widely on Thursday morning: Key details to know
Massive Outage Hits Cellphone Carriers
Cellphone carrier AT&T is currently facing a major outage, along with other top carriers, as reports of service disruptions flood in, according to data from Downdetector.
At around 3:35 a.m. on Thursday, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, among others, began receiving an unusually high number of outage reports. This widespread issue also affected smaller providers like Mint Mobile, Cricket Wireless, and TracFone, many of which share phone towers or are subsidiaries of larger carriers.
While one possible cause of this incident is an intentional hack, experts believe there may be something more fundamental at play. Lee McKnight, an associate professor at Syracuse University, suggests that the diffuse pattern of outages across the country indicates a larger issue.
As the morning progressed, several non-cellphone carrier companies, including Wells Fargo, Spotify, and Samsung, also experienced a surge in reported outages. However, it remains unclear whether these incidents are related to the cellphone carrier outages.
McKnight speculates that the widespread nature of these outages could be indicative of a massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on the core Internet infrastructure, particularly the Domain Name System (DNS). He points out that similar attacks have occurred in the past, most notably in 2016.
Between 8:50 a.m. and 9:05 a.m., AT&T customers alone reported a staggering 73,972 outages, according to Downdetector. The most affected locations include Houston, Chicago, Dallas, and New York City.
Customer Frustration Mounts
Concerned individuals have taken to various threads on Downdetector to voice their frustrations. One user from the 06790 zip code area wrote, “We just got bombed, and I don’t know what to do or where to go. There’s no way to communicate.”
Both Verizon and T-Mobile have denied that their networks are down and suggest that the reports may be due to users attempting to connect with individuals on different networks.
Verizon stated, “Our network is operating normally. Some customers experienced issues this morning when calling or texting customers served by another carrier. We are monitoring the situation.”
T-Mobile echoed this sentiment, saying, “Our network is operating normally. Down Detector likely reflects challenges our customers faced when trying to connect to users on other networks.”
However, in the threads dedicated to T-Mobile and Verizon on Downdetector, numerous users reported that their service was indeed functioning.
During the outage, affected customers saw SOS messages on their cellphone status bars, indicating a lack of connection to their provider’s network. AT&T advised its customers to use Wi-Fi for making calls, a feature available on many iPhones and Android phones.
AT&T released a statement, saying, “Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning. We are working urgently to restore service and encourage the use of Wi-Fi calling until then.”
For customers without access to Wi-Fi calling, AT&T recommended downloading Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications like WhatsApp to make phone calls while service is being restored.
As the situation unfolds, customers and providers alike are eagerly awaiting a resolution to this widespread outage.

How are businesses and individuals being affected by the loss of mobile communication in these areas?
Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City. Customers in these areas have reported loss of data connectivity, voice calls, and text messages, causing significant inconvenience and disruption to their daily lives.
AT&T, in a statement released early Thursday morning, acknowledged the service disruption and assured customers that their teams are actively working to resolve the issue. However, no estimated time for full restoration has been provided at this time.
The impact of this outage on businesses and individuals cannot be understated. In a society heavily reliant on mobile communication, such disruptions can have far-reaching consequences. Employees may be unable to access important work emails or communicate with colleagues and clients, while individuals may experience difficulty in making emergency calls or staying connected with loved ones.
The outage has also raised concerns about the vulnerability of our digital infrastructure. As more aspects of our lives become intertwined with technology, the potential for large-scale disruptions and cyberattacks becomes more pronounced. It is crucial that companies and government agencies continue to invest in robust cybersecurity measures and proactive monitoring to mitigate the risks posed by such incidents.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the regulatory body overseeing the telecommunications industry, has already announced that it is investigating the outage. Chairman Ajit Pai has expressed his concern over the impact on consumers and the need for a swift resolution. The FCC will work closely with the affected carriers to gather information and ensure steps are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In the midst of this outage, it is imperative for customers to remain patient and take necessary precautions. While the carriers work to resolve the issue, users should consider alternative means of communication, such as landline phones or messaging apps that utilize Wi-Fi. Additionally, it is crucial to stay alert for any security threats and report any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.
As the situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the immense reliance we have on our mobile devices and the importance of a resilient and secure telecommunications infrastructure. The outage highlights the need for continuous investment in network infrastructure, robust cybersecurity measures, and effective emergency response plans. It is our collective responsibility to ensure the resilience and security of our digital ecosystem, particularly as our everyday lives become increasingly intertwined with technology.
