MA DA sends DeSantis-flown immigrants case to Merrick Garland.
A Call for Investigation into Arrival of Immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard
A district attorney in Massachusetts is urging U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to launch an investigation into the recent arrival of nearly 50 immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard. This request comes as part of a growing trend among state officials seeking federal criminal inquiries.
Last September, Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and his administration transported 49 immigrants to the island on two planes. This strategy, also employed by Republican governors like Greg Abbott (TX), aims to alleviate the immigration influx at the southern border.
Seeking Answers and Justice
Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois has taken action by sending a letter to Garland on Monday, urging him to initiate federal and criminal investigations into the migrant transports. Galibois highlights “serious indications and allegations” that suggest the immigrants were deceived into making the journey.
In his letter, Galibois points out that subsequent reporting and public statements indicate that Governor Ron DeSantis and his administration were responsible for planning, initiating, funding, and executing this operation using taxpayer money.
Galibois argues that this “enterprise” was conceived in Florida, launched in Texas, and involved transporting the immigrants briefly through North Carolina and South Carolina before concluding in Massachusetts. He believes that due to the interstate transportation of these migrants, federal prosecution remains a viable option.
Allegations of Deception
Several of the immigrants who arrived in Martha’s Vineyard have claimed that they were tricked by the DeSantis administration into taking the flight under false pretenses. They allege that they were promised gift certificates, employment opportunities, and housing upon their arrival on the island.
In response, these immigrants filed a federal class-action lawsuit against Governor DeSantis the week after their arrival.
Joining Forces for Accountability
District Attorney Galibois is not alone in his pursuit of justice. He is following the lead of Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA), California Attorney General Rob Bonta, and Bexar County, Texas, Sheriff Javier Salazar. Together, they have sent a similar request to Attorney General Garland, urging him to investigate the transportation of immigrants to Massachusetts and California over the past nine months. They argue that using people as political props is unconscionable.
A spokesperson from Governor DeSantis’s office previously clarified that written or verbal consent was obtained from the immigrants before they boarded the planes. Governor DeSantis has been critical of President Joe Biden and Democrats, accusing them of not doing enough to address the influx of illegal immigrants at the Texas border.
The Washington Examiner has reached out to Governor DeSantis’s office for comment on District Attorney Galibois’s letter to Attorney General Garland.
