Massie floats his name for Trump’s agriculture secretary – Washington Examiner
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) expressed interest in becoming the Secretary of Agriculture if former President Donald Trump were to be reelected. In a post on social media, Massie, known for his libertarian views, responded to a suggestion about potential Cabinet appointments by indicating he could contribute positively in such a role. This came after Trump mentioned he would appoint a libertarian to his Cabinet if the Libertarian party supported him at their national convention; however, the party ultimately chose a different candidate, Chase Oliver.
Massie floats his name for Trump’s agriculture secretary
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) hinted he would be interested in being former President Donald Trump‘s Department of Agriculture Secretary, if the former president were reelected.
In a post on X, Massie, who is a noted libertarian, said, “Trump said he will appoint a libertarian to his cabinet. Whom would you choose, for which position?”
Commenters suggested Massie should take a position on his Cabinet, and he agreed, saying, “I think I could do some good for this country as Secretary of Agriculture, for any president.”
Trump said he would place a Libertarian in his Cabinet if the party backed him at the Libertarian National Convention. The party did not, nominating Chase Oliver instead.
If Trump were to place a Libertarian in his Cabinet, Massie is one of the most likely options as an experienced House Republican. He gained some fame for powering his home with solar panels and a Tesla battery, a clue as to why he could be interested in a position in agriculture.
Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), who was previously floated as Trump’s running mate, is also likely to have a spot in the former president’s Cabinet if he’s elected. Trump called him “Mr. Secretary” when he told Burgum he wouldn’t be his vice president.
There’s some speculation that Trump may draw on Republican members of the Senate to fill his Cabinet, such as Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Tom Cotton (R-AR), both of whom were considered as running mates.
The Trump campaign declined to comment on Massie’s candidacy for Agriculture Secretary. The Washington Examiner reached out to Massie’s office but did not receive a response.
Massie’s wife recently died, prompting condolences from lawmakers across the political spectrum.
