Newt Gingrich claims Matt Gaetz stirred up trouble in the GOP by pushing out Kevin McCarthy
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich Blames Rep. Matt Gaetz for House GOP Dysfunction
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) points a finger at Rep. Matt Gaetz from Florida for the current disarray within the House GOP. Speaking on Fox News with Laura Ingraham, Gingrich expressed concern over the chaos fracturing the House Republican caucus, risking the removal of another Republican speaker since October.
Newt Gingrich on Matt Gaetz’s Impact
- Gingrich remarked, “We shouldn’t underestimate how bad what Matt Gaetz did was for the whole system. He unleashed the demons by driving Kevin McCarthy out of office.”
- Gaetz’s actions have led to a series of early departures within the GOP, further weakening its slight majority.
Gaetz’s rebellion against former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in October caused turmoil, resulting in Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana assuming the speaker’s role temporarily. Accusing McCarthy of backroom deals with Democrats worsened the rift within the party.
Gingrich emphasized the need to elect former President Donald Trump back to the White House in the upcoming November elections, advocating for a strong Republican majority to govern effectively in Congress.
Regarding Speaker Mike Johnson, Gingrich mentioned the difficulty in managing the House due to a lack of overwhelming majority support. He criticized the House Freedom Caucus for obstructing progress and diminishing the Republicans’ influence in policy-making.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene filed a motion to challenge Speaker Johnson over a spending package last week, highlighting growing dissent within the House GOP caucus. Greene described her action as a cautionary move rather than an immediate ousting.
Despite criticisms, Gaetz defended Speaker Johnson against threats of removal from House conservatives, emphasizing the need to avoid a Democrat taking the speaker’s position.
