Matt Mackowiak: Instead of Playing the Blame Game, Democrats Must Accept Our Financial Reality
According to the latest Congressional Budget Office (CBO) statistics, our nation is facing a staggering $31.5 trillion in debt, with an additional $19 trillion expected over the next decade. While the numbers are difficult to wrap our heads around, it’s clear that Democrats, who control two-thirds of our government, have some difficult decisions to make regarding our spending.
President Biden and Democratic lawmakers have been constantly writing checks that they can’t cash, with programs like the American Rescue Plan and the Green New Deal adding trillions of dollars in spending in just two years. With debates over defense spending, programs like Social Security and Medicare, and earmarks, there is a lot at play in deciding how to allocate our federal spending budget.
While there is blame to go around, it is the responsibility of the current Democratic-led government to work towards a sustainable financial future for our nation. They must be willing to sit down with Republicans and find reasonable compromises on cutting spending while preserving crucial programs like Social Security and Medicare that directly impact the well-being of millions of older Americans.
