Mayorkas visits Mexico to enhance ‘cooperation’ amid immigration surge.
Homeland Security Secretary and Biden Officials to Meet with Mexican Government
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and senior Biden administration officials are heading to Mexico City to address the pressing issues of security and trade agreements, as both countries grapple with worsening migration crises at the border.
The DHS has announced that Mayorkas will co-chair the 2023 U.S.-Mexico High-Level Security Dialogue, marking the third bilateral meeting of its kind since President Joe Biden took office.
“These dialogues are really the scaffolding for our economic and security cooperation with Mexico. In our annual meetings, we assess our progress and drive strategic priorities for the coming year,”
The meeting comes at a critical time as the U.S.-Mexico border crisis continues to escalate. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador revealed that thousands of immigrants are entering from Guatemala daily, with up to 10,000 individuals illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border each day.
Mayorkas will lead the talks alongside Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Attorney General Merrick Garland.
“This year’s meeting will focus on protecting citizens, preventing transnational crime, and dismantling criminal networks involved in illegal activities such as drug and human smuggling,”
The Biden administration aims to strengthen cooperation by investing in justice and security sector institutions to combat high-impact crimes and ensure the safety of Americans living or traveling in Mexico.
Furthermore, the administration plans to enhance information sharing, collaborate with the private sector, and bolster law enforcement partnerships.
Both governments will also discuss strategies to disrupt criminal organizations’ attempts to launder profits from the U.S. back to Mexico.
