Mayorkas on impeachment: ‘Hard to comprehend
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Confused by Impeachment Pursuit
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is bewildered by the Republican Party’s relentless pursuit of his impeachment. Despite overseeing a surge in illegal immigration that has sparked both humanitarian and legal crises at the U.S. southern border, Mayorkas finds himself at the center of a political firestorm in Washington, D.C. The U.S. House is poised to vote on articles of impeachment against him, which were passed out of committee along party lines last week.
“Very difficult to make sense of it,” Mayorkas said of the impeachment push, according to The Washington Post. “It’s very difficult. So I don’t try to make sense of it.”
“I’m doing my work. I’m doing my work. And um, making sure it doesn’t distract me from it,” he added.
Mayorkas, who joined the Biden administration early in February 2021, expressed surprise at the level of polarization and politics he has encountered since assuming his position.
“I did not expect this level of polarization. And I did not expect this level of politics,” Mayorkas said. “Level and nature of politics.”
Republicans on the House Homeland Security committee have accused Mayorkas of a “breach of trust” and a “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law,” leading to the passage of two articles of impeachment against him. The situation at the southern border has garnered bipartisan criticism, with even the White House acknowledging the immigration levels as a crisis.
The U.S. Border Patrol has recorded approximately 8.5 million encounters with illegal immigrants since President Biden took office, according to Department of Homeland Security data. Additionally, around 2.3 million individuals have been released into the U.S. by the Border Patrol between February 2021 and September of the same year.

An estimated 2 million others have entered the United States illegally as “gotaways,” individuals who were observed crossing but not intercepted by law enforcement. The actual number of gotaways, including those who entered the country without surveillance, could be hundreds of thousands higher.
In fiscal year 2023, the number of illegal immigrants encountered at the border reached a record high of approximately 3.2 million, surpassing the previous year’s record of 2.7 million.
What are the reasons behind the intense scrutiny that Alejandro Mayorkas has faced as the Homeland Security Secretary?
Ntil someone tells me that I need to stop doing my work, I’m going to continue doing my work.”
Mayorkas, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, has faced intense scrutiny since taking office due to the border crisis. Under his watch, the number of illegal border crossings has reached record levels, with thousands of migrants attempting to enter the U.S. every month. This influx has overwhelmed Border Patrol facilities and strained resources, exacerbating the humanitarian situation.
Republicans have accused Mayorkas of failing to effectively address the crisis and of pursuing policies that incentivize illegal immigration. They argue that his impeachment is necessary to hold him accountable for what they view as a dereliction of duty.
However, Mayorkas has defended his actions and maintained that he is focused on addressing the root causes of migration and finding long-term solutions to the border crisis. In an interview with The Washington Post, he emphasized the complexities of the issue, stating, “There is no single solution… We have to be realistic about what we’re confronting.”
Mayorkas has also called for bipartisan cooperation in addressing the border crisis, highlighting the need for comprehensive immigration reform and increased funding for border security. He has expressed a willingness to work with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to find common ground and enact necessary changes to the immigration system.
Despite these efforts, the Republican Party has remained steadfast in its pursuit of Mayorkas’ impeachment. Some argue that this is purely a politically motivated move, aimed at undermining the Biden administration’s immigration policies and scoring political points ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
It is indeed rare for a Homeland Security Secretary to face impeachment proceedings. However, critics argue that the magnitude of the border crisis necessitates decisive action and accountability from the person in charge. They believe that allowing Mayorkas to remain in his position without repercussions would be a disservice to the American people.
As the impeachment vote approaches, the outcome remains uncertain. Democrats hold a slim majority in the House, which means that Mayorkas could potentially survive the impeachment proceedings. Nevertheless, the fact that his impeachment is even being considered highlights the deep divisions and polarization surrounding the issue of immigration in the United States.
Regardless of the outcome, it is clear that the border crisis and Mayorkas’ handling of it will continue to be contentious topics. The need to secure the border, protect national security, and address the humanitarian aspects of illegal immigration is a priority for both parties. Finding a genuine and effective solution requires constructive dialogue and a commitment to addressing the underlying root causes of migration.
At the end of the day, the question should not solely be about Alejandro Mayorkas’ impeachment, but rather how the United States can work together to address the ongoing challenges at the southern border and ensure the safety and well-being of all those involved.
