McCarthy-backed groups break 2024 fundraising records.
Conservative Groups Shatter Fundraising Records, Boosting House Republicans
Conservative groups dedicated to supporting GOP candidates have achieved unprecedented success in off-year fundraising, providing a crucial advantage to House Republicans as they strive to maintain their slim majority in the upcoming year. The Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) and American Action Network, both influential fundraising organizations closely aligned with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), have collectively raised an astounding $35 million during the first six months of 2023. This surpasses the previous off-year record of $21.6 million reported in the first half of 2021.
Record-Breaking Fundraising Haul for Kevin McCarthy
“We continue to break records because of the results of the Republican-led House and the clear momentum to hold and expand the House majority behind Speaker McCarthy,” said CLF President Dan Conston. “These initial resources give CLF early firepower to begin making critical investments that will yield major results next November.”
CLF, in particular, has reported impressive numbers, raising over $19 million so far this year and holding nearly $18 million in cash. This substantial fundraising will undoubtedly provide significant support to Republican candidates in the 2024 cycle, as these two groups are typically the largest spenders on behalf of House GOP candidates.
These numbers build upon the strong fundraising performance of McCarthy himself, who raised an impressive $21.7 million through his McCarthy Victory Fund during the second quarter alone. McCarthy has already allocated $17.6 million to the National Republican Congressional Committee, the primary fundraising arm for the House GOP, and an additional $8.3 million directly to GOP incumbents.
McCarthy has also utilized his fundraising prowess to assist certain House Republicans seeking reelection, including the outspoken Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). McCarthy recently hosted a benefit event for Greene, demonstrating his support after she was removed from the House Freedom Caucus last month.
All 435 seats will be up for grabs in 2024 as Republicans strive to maintain their slim majority in the lower chamber. Out of these seats, 42 are considered competitive, with the majority held by Democrats. However, the GOP holds 18 of these competitive seats in districts that voted for President Joe Biden in 2020, compared to just five Democrats defending seats in districts carried by former President Donald Trump. This balance of vulnerable GOP-held seats ensures a fiercely competitive election cycle.
