McCarthy dismisses Gaetz’s threats: ‘I’m ready’
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Fires Back at Rep. Matt Gaetz, Threatens Motion to Vacate
On Sunday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) responded to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) with a fiery comeback, vowing to file a motion to vacate this week.
Gaetz has been persistently stating since the beginning of September that if McCarthy were to present a clean continuing resolution on the floor, as he did on Saturday, Gaetz would proceed with his motion to vacate.
How McCarthy Led His Divided Conference in Avoiding a Government Shutdown
Earlier in the day, Gaetz reiterated the threats he has been making for the past month, revealing to CNN’s Jake Tapper his plan to file a motion to vacate and remove McCarthy as speaker this week.
“I do intend to file a motion to vacate against Speaker McCarthy this week. I think we need to rip off the band-aid,” Gaetz boldly declared. “I think we need to move on with new leadership that can be trustworthy.”
Later in the day, McCarthy was asked about Gaetz’s ultimatum on Face the Nation. He dismissed the threat and challenged Gaetz to follow through, confidently stating, “I’ll survive.”
“[Gaetz] is more interested in securing TV interviews than doing something. He wanted to push us into a shutdown, even threatening his own district with all the military people who would not be paid only because he wants to take this motion,” McCarthy criticized. “So be it. Bring it on, let’s get over with it, and let’s start governing.”
In order to remove a speaker, Gaetz will need 218 votes on his motion to vacate. He claims to have “a requisite number of House Republicans, a sufficient number to ensure that we don’t own McCarthy anymore.” However, he admitted that he expects his motion to initially fail due to some Democrats voting against it.
