McCarthy dismisses Gaetz’s threats: ‘I’m ready’

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Fires Back at Rep. Matt Gaetz, Threatens Motion to Vacate

On Sunday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) responded to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL)⁣ with a fiery comeback, vowing to file ‌a motion to vacate this week.

Gaetz has⁤ been persistently stating since the beginning of ⁢September that if McCarthy were to present a clean continuing resolution on the floor, as ⁢he did‍ on Saturday, Gaetz would proceed with his motion to vacate.

How McCarthy Led His Divided Conference in Avoiding⁢ a Government Shutdown

Earlier⁣ in the day, Gaetz ⁢reiterated the threats he has been ‍making for ⁢the ⁢past month, revealing to CNN’s Jake⁣ Tapper his plan to file a motion to vacate and remove McCarthy as speaker this week.

“I do intend to file ⁣a motion to vacate against Speaker McCarthy this week. I think we need to rip off the band-aid,” Gaetz boldly declared. “I think we ⁣need to move on with new leadership⁣ that can be trustworthy.”

Later in the day, McCarthy was asked‌ about Gaetz’s ultimatum on Face the⁢ Nation. He dismissed ⁣the threat and challenged Gaetz to follow through, confidently stating,‌ “I’ll ‌survive.”

“[Gaetz] is more interested in securing TV interviews ⁣than ⁣doing something. He wanted to push us into a shutdown, even threatening his ⁤own district with all the military people who would not⁤ be⁤ paid only because ‍he ⁢wants to take this motion,” ‍McCarthy criticized. “So be it. Bring it on,⁣ let’s get over⁤ with it, ‍and let’s start governing.”

In order to remove a speaker, Gaetz will need 218 votes on his motion to vacate. ⁤He claims to have “a requisite number of ⁢House Republicans,⁣ a sufficient⁢ number⁢ to ensure⁣ that we don’t own McCarthy anymore.” However, he admitted‌ that he expects his motion to initially fail due to some Democrats voting against it.
