McCarthy says motion to oust him is exactly what Biden desires.
House Speaker McCarthy Vows to Stay Strong Amid Threats
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) assured Fox host Maria Bartiromo that he would not back down in the face of attempts to remove him from his position.
“If you did a motion to vacate, you would have to have a handful of Republicans work with Adam Schiff, Eric Swalwell, Ilhan Omar, to remove the Speaker, and it would be exactly what the president wants,” he said in the Sunday morning interview.
“How would we ever select the speaker?” he questioned, referring to the previous deadlocked vote in January. McCarthy won on the 15th ballot after a week of rallying Republican support. He emphasized that such a move would hinder House Republicans’ investigations.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) wasted no time criticizing the speaker just an hour after the launch of an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
“I rise today to serve notice—Mr. Speaker, you are out of compliance with the agreement that allowed you to assume this role,” said Gaetz, highlighting the absence of votes on crucial issues like balancing the budget and congressional roll calls.
“The path forward for the House of Representatives is to either bring you into immediate, total compliance or remove you pursuant to a motion to vacate the chair,” he asserted.
In the Sunday interview, McCarthy acknowledged that his colleagues had the right to take such action but believed it would only distract from serving the American public.
“These are individuals that have the right to do what they want, but I am only going to focus on the American public,” he stated.
Impeachment
In the same interview, he confirmed that Hunter Biden, the president’s son, would be subpoenaed as part of the impeachment inquiry.
“We’re showing the American public how we follow the Constitution. An impeachment inquiry is simply an ability that gives Congress the strength to get the answers to questions,” he explained. House Republicans are seeking answers regarding the president’s use of a pseudonym and whistleblower allegations.
“We’re simply following the facts wherever they take us, but unfortunately it looks like a culture of corruption with this family,” McCarthy expressed.
President Biden has consistently maintained that he has no involvement in his son’s business and has referred inquiries to the Department of Justice.
“Hunter Biden will get subpoenaed,” McCarthy affirmed, “I think we should have the bank statements to actually know where did the money go, so you would have the questions to ask Hunter Biden.”
According to McCarthy, the official impeachment process grants Congress the legal means to obtain necessary information.
“That’s going to be bank statements, that’s going to be credit card statements, that’s going to be family members coming in and answering the questions so the American public knows,” he emphasized.
Shutdown?
McCarthy also addressed the issue of a potential government shutdown.
“I’ve been through shutdowns, and I have never seen someone win a shutdown,” he remarked, highlighting that allowing a shutdown would only empower the Biden administration.
“How are you going to win your arguments to secure the border if the border agents don’t get paid? How are you going to win the arguments to get wokeism out of the Department of Defense if even our own troops aren’t being paid? We have no strength there,” he argued.
McCarthy pointed out that issues like border security have gained bipartisan support, with progressive city officials like New York City Mayor Eric Adams now recognizing the need to halt illegal immigration. However, he refrained from commenting on more contentious matters such as funding Ukraine and deep spending cuts, which certain members are likely to strongly oppose.
He also criticized colleagues who support a shutdown, stating that House bills are more conservative than those in the Senate and need to be passed to initiate negotiations.
“Anytime a Republican wants to hold back and stop the floor from working when Republicans have the majority, that makes us weaker at the end of the day,” he concluded. “I believe we’ll get agreement this week.”
How does House Speaker Kevin McCarthy justify his decision to subpoena Hunter Biden in the impeachment inquiry?
O see where these transactions are going.” He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the investigation.
The impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden has been a contentious issue, with Republicans raising concerns about potential corruption within the Biden family. McCarthy’s decision to subpoena Hunter Biden as part of the inquiry is seen as a move to uncover the truth and hold those involved accountable. He defended this action as a necessary step in following the facts and ensuring that the American public has access to all relevant information.
President Biden has repeatedly denied any involvement in his son’s business dealings and has directed inquiries to the Department of Justice. However, McCarthy and other House Republicans are determined to get to the bottom of the allegations and shed light on what they view as a culture of corruption within the Biden family.
In conclusion, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has vowed to stay strong amid threats to remove him from his position. He remains determined to serve the American public and carry out the responsibilities of his role. McCarthy’s decision to subpoena Hunter Biden as part of the impeachment inquiry is viewed as a necessary step in uncovering the truth and ensuring transparency.
