McCarthy refrains from demanding Biden impeachment inquiry for now, but may consider it later.
Speaker McCarthy: Actions by House Uncovered Could Lead to Impeachment Inquiry
Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) stated that while he is not currently calling for an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, he believes that the House’s investigations have revealed actions that “could rise” to that level in the future.
However, McCarthy made it clear that he is not ruling out impeachment altogether.
Uncovering Information
During an appearance on Fox News, McCarthy emphasized that the information uncovered by the House Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means committees is ”rising to the level of impeachment inquiry.”
Yet, on the following day, McCarthy clarified his stance, explaining that he wants to see where the facts from the investigations lead before making a definitive call for an impeachment inquiry.
“It wasn’t an announcement,” McCarthy told reporters. “I simply said that the actions that I’m seeing by this administration, withholding the agencies from being able to work with us, that would rise to the level of an impeachment inquiry. We still have a number of investigations going forward.”
Continued Investigation
McCarthy emphasized that the House’s position regarding an impeachment inquiry remains unchanged, and they are actively gathering more information on President Biden and his family’s foreign business dealings.
He specifically referenced testimony from two Internal Revenue Service whistleblowers who claimed that the Justice Department prevented them from interviewing Hunter Biden. Additionally, McCarthy mentioned an unverified FBI-generated document that alleges Joe and Hunter Biden received $5 million from a Ukrainian energy company in exchange for pressuring the Ukrainian government to fire a prosecutor investigating the company.
McCarthy argued that the Department of Justice’s failure to provide this document to investigators, as alleged by the whistleblowers, indicates interference in Hunter Biden’s investigation.
Furthermore, McCarthy expressed concern over the slow response from agencies involved in the investigation, such as the Justice Department, IRS, and U.S. Secret Service, in providing employees for transcribed interviews. He suggested that this delay could also contribute to the potential for an impeachment inquiry.
Seeking the Truth
McCarthy stressed that if government departments deny the House’s requests for information, similar to the actions of Richard Nixon, it would warrant an impeachment inquiry. This would empower both Republicans and Democrats in Congress to obtain the necessary information for the American public and uncover the truth.
However, McCarthy informed Punchbowl News that he does not intend to call for or initiate an impeachment inquiry this week.
