McCarthy doesn’t confirm if Santos will be ousted from Congress following charges.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) refuses to call for Congressman George Santos (R-N.Y.) to step down from his position in the House of Representatives, despite facing criminal charges from the Biden administration’s Justice Department. During a press conference on May 9, McCarthy stated that he would review the charges against Santos.
Santos, a freshman Congressman, is currently facing federal charges in the Eastern District of New York, including wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, and making false statements to the House of Representatives. These charges come after a series of accusations against Santos, including violating federal campaign finance law during the midterms and making demonstrably false statements.
Despite these allegations, McCarthy granted Santos committee assignments at the start of the 118th Congress. However, Santos soon stepped down from those assignments, and other New York Republicans introduced a bill targeting individuals indicted for campaign finance violations, inspired by Santos.
It’s clear that Santos has a history of dishonesty and potentially criminal behavior. As a member of Congress, he should be held to the highest standards of integrity and accountability. It remains to be seen whether McCarthy will take action against Santos, but the public deserves transparency and justice in this matter.
