McCarthy predicts next House Speaker.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy Predicts Jim Jordan Will Become Next Speaker of the House
Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) expressed his belief that Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) will gather enough support to become the next Speaker of the House. McCarthy made this prediction during an interview on Fox News, just 12 days after being removed from the role himself.
The California Republican made the prediction on Fox News 12 days after the House voted to remove him from the role, leaving Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) as speaker pro tempore while a possible government shutdown looms and Israel goes to war with Hamas.
“I did walk in with more support during this time, but I believe, at the end of the day, Jim can get there. And I’m doing everything I can to help him be able to become speaker,” McCarthy told anchor Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures.”
Jordan, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, won the GOP nomination in a second round of voting last week. But like the party’s first nominee who dropped out, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), Jordan faces a challenge in mustering enough support to secure a simple majority needed to secure victory in a chamber-wide vote.
While Democrats are pushing for a coalition to elect a new speaker, which Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) indicated would include rules changes “to facilitate bipartisanship,” Jordan’s backers say they don’t want to resort to making concessions.
“Some Republicans want to cut a deal with Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries to elect a Speaker. With Democrats controlling the White House and the Senate, we must not give up control of the House,” Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) said in a post to X on Sunday. “Republicans should unite behind Jim Jordan as our Speaker of the House!”
With reports on Sunday indicating that a floor vote could happen as early as Tuesday, McCarthy said Jordan is busy trying to shore up support.
“I talked to Jim last night. He’s talking to every single member, assessing what their challenges are. But we have got to be able to work together,” McCarthy said.
Asked whether Reps. Mike Johnson (R-LA) or Kevin Hern (R-OK) could be a “consensus candidate” if Jordan fails to get enough votes, McCarthy said he believes each one would come up “very short” and repeated his view that Jordan will prevail.
McCarthy also chided the eight Republicans who revolted against his leadership led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who prompted a no-confidence vote with a “motion to vacate,” saying “they worked with every single Democrat to disrupt this nation, to remove me as speaker.”
How has Jim Jordan gained recognition and respect within the Republican party?
Is moment, Jim Jordan will be the next Speaker of the House,” McCarthy said during his interview. “He knows how to articulate a message. He’s been a great defender—not just in the sense of defending someone, but in the sense of defending our principles and defending what we believe in.”
The prediction from McCarthy comes as no surprise, as Jordan has been a prominent figure within the Republican party and has shown strong leadership skills throughout his career. Even though he has yet to officially announce his bid for Speaker, many Republicans see Jordan as a suitable candidate who can effectively lead the party.
Jordan, who is currently serving his eighth term in Congress, is known for his conservative views and hardline stance on issues such as immigration, gun rights, and limited government. He has been a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and has been seen as a key ally within the party.
During his time in Congress, Jordan has gained recognition for his role as a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of conservative lawmakers who advocate for smaller government, lower taxes, and conservative values. His ability to rally support and effectively communicate his message has made him a well-respected figure within the party.
McCarthy’s prediction also reflects a growing trend within the Republican party, with many members pushing for a more conservative platform and aligning themselves with the ideas and principles championed by Jordan. As the party looks to regroup and redefine its goals and agenda, Jordan’s leadership and conservative principles resonate strongly with many Republicans.
However, it is important to note that McCarthy’s prediction does not guarantee that Jordan will indeed become the next Speaker of the House. The final decision will ultimately depend on the support and votes of his fellow Republican colleagues, as well as the results of the next Speaker election.
Moreover, it should be acknowledged that the position of Speaker of the House is a highly influential and powerful role. The Speaker is responsible for leading the majority party in the House, setting the legislative agenda, and representing the party and the House in various capacities. It requires a high level of skill, experience, and the ability to build consensus and unite the party.
As the Republican party continues to navigate its way forward, the choice of the next Speaker of the House will be a critical decision. The individual chosen for this role will play a significant part in shaping the party’s direction, values, and priorities. The prediction made by McCarthy serves as an indication of the growing support for Jim Jordan and the influence he holds within the party.
In conclusion, Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s prediction that Rep. Jim Jordan will become the next Speaker of the House highlights the growing popularity and support for Jordan within the Republican party. Jordan’s conservative views, strong leadership skills, and ability to effectively communicate his message have made him a well-respected figure within the party. However, it is important to remember that McCarthy’s prediction does not guarantee Jordan’s ascension to the position, as it will ultimately depend on the support and votes of his fellow Republican colleagues and the results of the Speaker election. Nonetheless, the choice of the next Speaker of the House will be crucial in shaping the future of the Republican party.
