McCarthy unconcerned by Gaetz’s threats to speaker’s gavel: ‘Go ahead, try it’
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Unfazed by Threats to His Speakership
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) remains confident in his position despite veiled threats from conservative Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to bring a motion to vacate. McCarthy, who just returned from a busy recess, is now faced with the challenge of addressing these threats to his speakership.
Gaetz took to X, the popular social media site formerly known as Twitter, to imply that he might take action against McCarthy. When asked about his concerns regarding Gaetz’s posts, McCarthy dismissed them, stating, ”Not at all. Matt’s Matt. He can go ahead and do it.”
Conservatives Demand Fiscal Responsibility
Gaetz’s motion to vacate threats come at a critical time as the House prepares to tackle its remaining 11 appropriations bills. Hard-line conservatives, including Gaetz, are adamant that McCarthy must prioritize spending cuts and resist Democratic pressure to increase spending. Their stance throughout this process has been to cap spending at $1.471 trillion.
McCarthy has previously faced similar threats from the right fringe of his party during debt ceiling negotiations. Some members of his conference felt that his proposed bill to raise the debt ceiling was not sufficient. With Republicans holding a slim majority, it would only take a handful of them joining forces with Democrats to remove McCarthy from his position.
Gaetz Seeks Democratic Support
Responding to a post from Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) criticizing his “empty threats,” Gaetz asked how many Democratic votes he could count on if he were to make a motion to remove McCarthy. He even requested Swalwell to act as a whip among his Democratic counterparts.
“Are all Democrats so willing, Eric? Will my NorCal twitter troll have the courage and efficacy to become my Democratic whip? If I’ll work with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to ban congressional stock trading, I’ll absolutely work with you to rid the House of ineffective leadership,” Gaetz stated.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his speakership, McCarthy remains unfazed and ready to face any challenges that come his way.
