McCarthy offers new concessions to end the Speaker Vote Deadlock
Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has offered members opposing his speakership bid a new set of concessions, including seats on the powerful House Rules Committee, as he seeks to break a stalemate keeping him from winning the speaker’s gavel.
McCarthy claimed Wednesday evening that talks were fruitful with his detractors after he failed in reaching the 218 votes necessary to become speaker. He had tried to do this by holding three ballots on the same day. CNN reports that McCarthy will narrow the gap by accepting concessions. reported the news, though it’s not clear they will be enough for him to win majority support.
Twenty Republicans have voted against him, even though the majority of the GOP conference supports his leadership bid. The hard-liners have capitalized on Republicans’ razor-thin majority by making a steep set of demands of McCarthy that would diminish his power and elevate the caucus’s own members on important committees.
McCarthy made major concessions When he released a House Rules package for the new Congress, he was very pleased with the response. Most importantly, he agreed to allow only five members of the House to vote to remove a sitting speaker. Their opposition was not softened by the changes. McCarthy has been defeated in every round of the speakership election, which began Tuesday.

He also pledged to vote on bills concerning term limits and border protection.
This news comes on the heels Congressional Leadership Fund (a super PAC aligned and McCarthy) agreeing not interfere in open GOP primaries. McCarthy was supported by the Club for Growtha conservative group influential that had been opposed to his candidacy.
McCarthy touted the support As a sign of progress. “You know what I saw on TV today? ‘Oh, this has to be a day that Kevin gets movement.’ So, let’s measure it,” He told reporters Wednesday. “You’ve got the Club for Growth. You see that? Is that movement in your view?”

The House will resume its speakership election on Thursday at noon, as McCarthy supporters begin to feel tired. Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN), voiced her dissatisfaction Wednesday with the dialogue between sides by withdrawing her support McCarthy and voting “present” On the fifth and sixth ballots.
