McCarthy claims Trump is ‘stronger’ for 2024, despite doubts about his candidacy.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Believes Trump is in a Stronger Position to Win in 2024
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) expressed his belief that former President Donald Trump has a greater chance of winning the presidency in 2024 than he did in 2016, despite his earlier doubts about Trump’s candidacy. McCarthy’s confidence stems from a recent poll conducted by Morning Consult, which showed Trump leading President Joe Biden in a hypothetical matchup if both secure their party’s nominations next year. This marks the first time Trump has surpassed Biden in the pollster’s comparisons.
“As usual, the media is attempting to drive a wedge between President Trump and House Republicans as our committees are holding Biden’s DOJ accountable for their two-tiered levels of justice,” McCarthy stated. “The only reason Biden is using his weaponized federal government to go after President Trump is because he is Biden’s strongest political opponent, as polling continues to show. Just look at the numbers this morning — Trump is stronger today than he was in 2016.”
McCarthy’s statement contradicts his earlier remarks on CNBC’s Squawk Box, where he expressed uncertainty about whether Trump was the “strongest” candidate but acknowledged that anyone could potentially defeat Biden. However, McCarthy now firmly believes that Trump has the ability to win the general election next November.
Trump’s Legal Challenges and Biden’s Reelection Announcement
Since announcing his candidacy for president in November of last year, Trump has faced numerous legal obstacles, including being charged with 37 counts related to classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago residence after leaving the White House. On the other hand, Biden announced his bid for reelection earlier this year.
McCarthy also emphasized that if Trump were to secure the Republican nomination, it would be beneficial for both the party and the country due to his policies.
“I think if you want to go sheer policy to policy, it’s not what’s good for Republicans; it’s what’s good for America,” McCarthy asserted. “Trump’s policies are better, straightforward, than Biden’s policies.”
Trump faces competition from other potential Republican nominees, including Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), and former Vice President Mike Pence. McCarthy has not publicly endorsed any candidate for the primary.
