McCarthy mulls return to Speaker role amidst Israel-Hamas conflict.
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Signals Willingness to Return to Post
In a surprising turn of events, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has expressed openness to reclaiming his position, despite firmly stating last week that he would not run again.
During a news conference on Capitol Hill, McCarthy addressed the possibility of becoming a candidate for speaker, stating, ”I’m going to allow the conference to do their work, but the one thing I would ask my conference, you have 96 percent of the conference in one place, and you’re allowing 4 percent with the Democrats playing politics that now are putting a doubt inside this body. That is wrong.”
Furthermore, McCarthy emphasized the importance of not allowing “a few individuals that love a camera more than they love the American public” to hinder effective governance.
Currently, Republicans hold a slim majority of 221 to 212 in the House.
However, McCarthy faced opposition from fellow Republicans, including Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who joined with House Democrats to remove McCarthy as speaker in a recent vote. The final tally was 216-210.
Following the vote, McCarthy announced to reporters, “I will not run for speaker again. I’ll have the conference pick somebody else.”

Gaetz and his supporters were upset with McCarthy for pushing a continuing resolution to fund the federal government with majority Democratic support. Gaetz took to social media to assert that McCarthy does not have the necessary votes for re-election as speaker.
In response to GOP Rep. Mike Lawler of New York, who expressed support for McCarthy’s leadership, Gaetz replied, ”‘A lot of people’ <218. Math is real. Time to move forward."

Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, another Republican who voted to remove McCarthy, cited a CBS poll showing that 60 percent of Americans supported McCarthy’s removal.

During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” host Kristen Welker questioned Gaetz about the responsibility of removing McCarthy without a clear replacement. Gaetz responded by stating that not only do they have a clear replacement, but they have two strong candidates in Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise.
.@SpeakerMcCarthy was removed because he made multiple contradictory promises that ultimately could not be reconciled.
That led to us making a decision to move forward with someone new.
Fortunately, we have two great men running for Speaker: @Jim_Jordan and @SteveScalise! pic.twitter.com/28ipfHBrqQ

Gaetz confidently stated that if either Jordan or Scalise becomes the new speaker, it would be seen as an upgrade by the majority of Republicans.
