McCaul warns Blinken of contempt for Afghan dissent cable subpoena.
Get ready for some political drama! Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) is not messing around when it comes to the investigation into the United States’ withdrawal from Afghanistan. He’s even threatening to hold Secretary of State Antony Blinken in contempt of Congress!
McCaul, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs committee, sent a letter to Blinken on May 5th demanding that he comply with a subpoena for a dissent cable sent by U.S. diplomats in Kabul. The cable questioned the Biden administration’s intentions to remove troops in 2021 and was reportedly signed by 23 State Department officials.
In the letter, McCaul stated that if Blinken fails to comply with the subpoena, the committee is prepared to take necessary steps to enforce it, including holding him in contempt of Congress and/or initiating a civil enforcement proceeding.
This drama has been brewing for a while now. The committee initially asked for the documents earlier this year, but the State Department failed to comply with the subpoena by the April 19th deadline. Officials have since responded to the committee’s request, but their actions have not satisfied McCaul.
Stay tuned to see how this political showdown unfolds!
