During a press conference on Wednesday, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell captivated the audience with a momentary pause. As he delivered his remarks, McConnell briefly stopped and stared into space for several seconds, leaving everyone wondering what was going on in his mind.
McConnel (R-Ky.) stood at his podium for the weekly press conference, and said that the annual defense bill is proceeding with “good bipartisan cooperation.”
However, in a surprising turn of events, he lost his train of thought and trailed off midsentence. For about 20 seconds, he appeared to be lost in his own world, until his Republican colleagues intervened and asked if he wanted to return to his office.
Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and an aide of McConnell escorted him back to his office, while Senator John Thune (R-S.D.) and others continued addressing the press.
After a few minutes, McConnell returned to the press conference and confidently answered questions from the press.
When asked about the incident and its relation to his previous fall and injury, McConnell assured everyone that he was “fine” and fully capable of performing his duties.
Earlier this year, McConnell suffered a concussion and a fractured rib after falling and hitting his head at a hotel in Washington. After spending six weeks recovering at home, he returned to the Senate.
Senator John Barrasso, a former orthopedic surgeon and the number three Republican in the Senate, expressed his confidence in McConnell’s recovery and leadership.
“I said I was concerned when he fell and hit his head a number of months ago and was hospitalized,” he said. “And I think he’s made a remarkable recovery, he’s doing a great job leading our conference and was able to answer every question the press asked him today.”
McConnell, who has been serving in the Senate since 1984, became the longest-serving Senate party leader in January after being reelected to another term in 2022.
