Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) slammed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for proposing a partisan commission to investigate the January 6 Capitol protests. On Wednesday, McConnell said Pelosi’s commission would include seven appointments for Democrats, but only four Republicans.
Pelosi drafted her proposal using the 9-11 Commission as precedent. However, McConnell noted the 9-11 Commission was bipartisan, which in turn gave Americans more confidence in lawmakers’ sweeping recommendations.
“An inquiry with a hardwired partisan slant would never be legitimate in the eyes of the American people,” McConnell said. “An undertaking that is uneven or unjust would not help our country.”
McConnell said he would be more open to a commission that looked into Capitol protests and protests for social justice over the summer.
