Media watchdog Bozell to oversee Voice Of America

President Donald Trump has picked the founder of the nation’s top conservative media watchdogs to lead the agency that oversees Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, and Radio Marti.

In choosing L. Brent Bozell III to head the U.S. Agency for Global Media, Trump signaled an end to the liberal pitch in the diplomatic voices broadcast by the outlets as he moves to set an America-first agenda.

“As founder and president of the Media Research Center for 38 years, few understand the Global Media landscape in print, television, and online better than Brent,” said Trump.

“He and his family have fought for the American principles of Liberty, Freedom, Equality, and Justice for generations, and he will ensure that message is heard by Freedom-loving people around the World. Brent will bring some much needed change to the U.S. Agency for Global Media,” he added on his social media platforms.

Bozell, 69, said he is eager to meet with senators in advance of his confirmation.

He told Secrets, “The instructions from President Trump are clear. As with every other agency in the federal government, he wants USAGM to exercise fiscal responsibility. He also wants this agency to return to the key principle of promoting America and Americanism — free speech, free enterprise, individual freedom, the freedom to worship, and limited government with the consent of the governed — to the world. USAGM has an extraordinary mission and I’m honored the president has asked me to lead it.”

Conservative political voices were quick to embrace the president’s pick.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told Secrets on Thursday, “Brent Bozell has been the leading conservative expert on media and politics for the last generation. He will bring an enormous depth of knowledge and experience to strengthen America’s communications with the world.”

Craig Shirley, a longtime conservative communicator and Reagan biographer, said that in choosing Bozell, Trump was symbolically dismantling the liberal hierarchy at the agency.

“We are witnessing the end of an era and the rise of the New Media,” he told Secrets. He added, “No dictatorial power structure ever lasts. Good defeats evil in small and big ways. The British Empire fell to George Washington. Slavery fell to freedom. Hitler fell to the Allies. The Soviet Union fell to Ronald Reagan. And now the corrupt left-wing oligarch media is falling to a new and good media structure.”

Liberal media outlets focused not on his years as a conservative media fighter but on Bozell’s son, who was convicted in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots FBI roundup. He was sentenced for breaking windows and planned to plead guilty before the Justice Department piled on other charges.

Bozell believes that the extra charges were added because he and his Media Research Center were critical of former President Joe Biden and his media allies. After his son was pardoned by Trump this week, he called for the investigation of those who targeted his son.

Bozell has led a growing conservative media watchdog group that has put pressure on liberal outlets and called out the worst liberal media bias. He has also led defund efforts targeting public broadcasting.
