Meet Alvin Bragg, the prosecutor going after Donald Trump

Alvin Bragg, the district attorney of Manhattan, has been in the limelight for months due to his progressive views on criminal justice that have put him at odds with even some Democrats. He is at the center of a crucial 2022 midterm election contest and is regarded as a national mascot of liberal law enforcement. However, Alvin Bragg’s credibility will soon undergo an unprecedented level of scrutiny after former President Donald Trump claimed that Bragg’s office has prepared criminal charges against him.

Many Republicans have been criticizing Bragg’s record, with some focusing on the $1 million that he received from a political group supported by George Soros, a liberal donor who has promoted many progressive prosecutors across the country. Others have pointed out that Alvin Bragg has often spoke out about pursuing Donald Trump in the past, raising concerns about whether any indictment could be dismissed as partisan bias.

Bragg has generated controversy on multiple fronts, including a “day one memo” he sent to prosecutors in his office outlining a list of crimes the office would no longer prosecute, including marijuana offenses, subway fare evasion, resisting arrest, and trespassing. While some of these policies were later walked-back, his lenient approach to crime in general and aggressive approach to Trump in particular could raise questions about his credibility as the case progresses.

Despite all this, Bragg has remained focused on the Trump family, having previously spearheaded a lawsuit against the Trump Foundation while Trump was president. Bragg’s office has secured trial convictions and guilty pleas resulting from its investigations into the Trump Organization and Trump Payroll Corp., both of which faced charges related to tax fraud.
