Meet The Double-Crossing Texas GOP Congressman Lobbying For Dangerous Border Cartels
A congressional debate is brewing over the border crisis that is currently plaguing the nation, but it is not showing a clear division of political lines. House leaders recently signaled that a bill to curb illegal immigration could come to the floor in April, to which every Texas Republican in the delegation, except one, has rallied behind Rep. Chip Roy’s H.R. 29. The reform bill aims to fix asylum loopholes and reimplement the “turn away” authority necessary to restore some order. Tony Gonzales, a left-leaning Republican, is the only one who has not joined the rest of his party.
Gonzales has declared political war on his own conference and voters. He falsely maligned the Roy bill and even called it an “unchristian anti-immigrant bill.” Gonzales has vowed to vote “no” on the debt ceiling if the bill is brought to the House floor, despite the fact that it mandates the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to detain illegal immigrants while in expedited removal proceedings, or to keep potential immigrants in Mexico while their asylum claims are being adjudicated.
In simpler terms, the bill proposes a return to the Trump-era border security policies that succeeded in curbing illegal crossings and invalid asylum claims. Gonzales, however, continues to lie about the bill’s contents and is even willing to let his party’s priority of thwarting the inflationary spending in the Biden administration suffer.
Gonzales’ stance is a complete middle finger to his own border district voters, who are at the mercy of the misery, chaos, and death inflicted by the cartel-controlled border. More than 5 million illegal immigrants have crossed the southern border since President Biden’s inauguration, with an estimated 1.2 million “got-aways” evading U.S authorities to disappear inside the country’s interior. This ceding of operational control to murderous international drug cartels has caused fentanyl, a synthetic opioid responsible for the deaths of more than 70,000 Americans in 2021 alone, to enter the country. Gonzales’ militancy against key conservative and Republican principles has remained steadfast and consistent, formally leading to his censure by the Republican Party in Texas.
As the federal government is being weaponized to target its own citizens, with conservatives in Congress using the appropriations process to fight against the Biden administration’s abuses and profligate spending using the debt limit as leverage, Gonzales is actively sinking the entire Republican congressional strategy to ensure the southern border remains open. If the cartels had lobbyists in D.C., would they be doing anything different than Gonzales?
Although the Roy asylum reform bill would positively impact America’s southern border, it remains uncertain how Tony Gonzales, Donald Trump, who endorsed Gonzales to represent the largest stretch of the southern border, and longshot candidate Nikki Haley, who campaigns with Gonzales, despite finding his positions in conflict with each other, gain anything by working towards tanking safety and security for both their constituents and the country as a whole.
