State Department-Facebook meeting canceled due to judge’s warning of ‘Orwellian’ ties.
State Department Cancels Meeting with Facebook After Judge’s Order
The State Department officials have reportedly canceled a meeting with Facebook following a federal judge’s order to limit communication between the Biden administration and social media companies. The judge described their relationship as “Orwellian,” highlighting concerns over censorship and collusion.
A Facebook employee informed the Washington Post that the weekly Wednesday meeting between the social media giant and government officials was canceled due to U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty’s decision. The judge granted an injunction in a lawsuit filed by Louisiana and Missouri, alleging collusion between the government and social media companies to censor speech in violation of the First Amendment.
The canceled meeting would have covered important topics such as the 2024 election and potential hacking issues. Facebook was notified that the meetings were put on hold pending further guidance.
Furthermore, another meeting between Facebook and the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency may also face cancellation due to the judge’s ruling.
Judge’s Ruling Highlights Suppression of Speech
In his ruling on July 4, Judge Doughty stated that the government had suppressed opposition to COVID vaccines, masking, criticism of the 2020 election, true statements about the Hunter Biden laptop, and opposition to other government policies.
He wrote, “During the COVID-19 pandemic, a period perhaps best characterized by widespread doubt and uncertainty, the United States Government seems to have assumed a role similar to an Orwellian ‘Ministry of Truth’.”
The White House has appealed the judge’s injunction, arguing that their communications with social media companies are necessary for national security. They believe that responsible actions to protect public health, safety, and security should not be compromised.
However, Judge Doughty’s ruling stands for now as the case progresses through the judicial process. He emphasized that many of the actions taken by the Biden administration amounted to political discrimination, targeting conservative ideas and engaging in viewpoint discrimination of political speech.
The ruling still allows the government to address foreign election interference, cyberattacks, and criminal activity.
