Meg Ryan returns to rom-com after 15-year hiatus.
Meg Ryan Returns to Romantic Comedy in “What Happens Later”
Meg Ryan, beloved actress and queen of romantic comedies, is making her long-awaited comeback to the big screen. After a 15-year hiatus, Ryan will grace theaters once again in the upcoming film “What Happens Later,” set to be released in October.
The movie poster, unveiled on Tuesday, features Ryan alongside actor David Duchovny. The image captures the two stars sitting on a bench, with snow gently falling between them. The poster’s message, “They Missed Their Connection,” hints at the heartwarming and humorous story that awaits audiences.
“What Happens Later” follows the journey of Willa and Bill, former lovers who unexpectedly reunite after being snowed in at an airport overnight. Willa, a dreamer, and Bill, a pessimist, find themselves drawn to each other once again, despite their differences. As they unravel the mysteries of their shared past and reflect on the lives they once envisioned, they question whether their reunion is mere coincidence or something more magical.

This film not only marks Ryan’s return to acting but also her directorial debut. She took on the role of director and co-writer, alongside playwright Steven Dietz and novelist Kirk Lynn. Ryan’s last rom-com was “Serious Moonlight” in 2009, and her most notable romantic comedy success came in 2001 with “Kate & Leopold,” starring opposite Hugh Jackman.
Known for her iconic roles in ’90s classics like ”When Harry Met Sally,” “Sleepless in Seattle,” and “You’ve Got Mail,” Ryan draws inspiration from the golden era of filmmaking. She compares “What Happens Later” to the timeless charm and witty banter of movies from the 1940s.
“Nora Ephron used to say about rom-coms that they were really a secretly incredible delivery system to comment on the times, and we do that in this movie,” Ryan shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Don’t miss the highly anticipated return of Meg Ryan in “What Happens Later,” coming to theaters on October 13.
