Megadonor John Morgan teases new political party
John Morgan, a prominent attorney and megadonor from Florida, has proposed teh formation of a new political party aimed at addressing the concerns of those who feel caught in the political middle. He announced this idea on social media, criticizing the existing two-party system in the U.S. as flawed due to gerrymandering and divisive issues. Morgan described his initiative as an opportunity for people to band together, distinguishing it from the concept of “no labels,” which he believes doesn’t resonate with voters seeking a sense of community or allegiance.
He has indicated that his legal team is working on the necessary paperwork, and he is actively seeking four individuals to help establish the party. Among those he has reached out to for support are Phil Levine, a former Democratic mayor, and two other politically engaged individuals. Morgan’s proclamation followed his criticisms of Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, especially regarding its financial mismanagement, and has lead to speculation about his potential ambition for a gubernatorial run in Florida.
Megadonor John Morgan teases new political party
Attorney John Morgan, founder of the law firm Morgan and Morgan, floated the idea of a new political party on Wednesday.
Morgan is a sought-after megadonor from Florida who contributed $1 million to then-President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. When Biden dropped out and made way for then-Vice President Kamala Harris, Morgan announced he would no longer fundraise on the campaign’s behalf because he was neither “enthusiastic or hoping for a political appointment.”
“I am forming a new political party for those of us stuck in the middle. Our two party system is broken due to Gerrymandering and divisive issues … both sides. No labels is not an option. Everyone wants a team or tribe,” Morgan wrote on X. He offered no further details other than “stay tuned.”
On Thursday, Morgan followed up his post with a plea for others to join him, saying he needs four people to file the paperwork for a new party.
“Phil Levine is in,” Morgan said of the former Democratic mayor of Miami Beach. “What about you Rod Smith and John McKay? This is ecumenical.”
Smith was the chairman of the Florida Democratic Party, and McKay is a Republican who was the Florida Senate president.

This comes after Morgan went public with his criticisms of the Harris campaign. In response to the news that the campaign finished $20 million in debt, Morgan suggested that “this disqualifies her forever” because “if you can’t run a campaign, you can’t run America.”
Morgan’s announcement also came after Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) announced his gubernatorial bid. Many people online speculated that Morgan’s new party could be a veiled attempt to launch his own campaign for governor. Former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist worked for Morgan and Morgan and attempted a second campaign as a Democrat while still employed there.
