Megan Rapinoe avoids discussing biological male athletes in female competitions – Washington Examiner

Former women’s soccer player Megan Rapinoe was caught off-guard when questioned by journalist Katie Daviscourt during Seattle’s “Pride” parade about her views on transgender women competing in ‌women’s sports. Daviscourt referenced ‍an incident where the U.S. women’s soccer team lost to high school⁢ boys, questioning the fairness of those boys competing in girls’ sports. Rapinoe did ⁣not directly answer, appearing uneasy, which led a security guard and Sue Bird to intervene between her and Daviscourt. The conversation highlighted the controversial topic of transgender athletes in competitive sports.

Former women’s soccer player Megan Rapinoe was seemingly left speechless on Sunday when a journalist asked her to elaborate on her belief that biological male athletes should compete against females in athletic competitions.

Rapinoe was the Grand Marshal of Seattle’s “Pride” parade on Sunday. As part of the festivities, Rapinoe was seated in a white BMW convertible with former WNBA player Sue Bird and driven along the parade route. While the car was moving, Rapinoe was approached by The Post Millennial journalist Katie Daviscourt and asked about transgender women competing against females.

“Your U.S. women’s soccer team famously lost to high school boys. Do you really think it’s fair for these same boys to be competing in girls’ sports?” Daviscourt asked.

Rapinoe chuckled at the question before uttering, “My God,” to herself and then reaching for a drink. A security guard then walked up to position himself between Rapinoe and Daviscourt, and Bird put her arm over the retired soccer player. Yet, Daviscourt continued with her questions.

“Do you think it’s fair? Why should trans people compete against young girls?” Daviscourt continued. “Why should trans people compete against young girls? Do you not think that they’re gonna get hurt? Are they gonna get hurt? I’m a journalist. I just wanna know.”

Rapinoe never answered any of Daviscourt’s questions. However, the former Olympian’s silence was in stark contrast to her previous vocal support for biological males (transgender women) competing against females in athletic competitions. In a previous interview, Rapinoe even suggested that she would support a biological male hypothetically taking a roster spot of an actual female on the United States Women’s National Team if the player identified himself as a female.

“Absolutely,” she said in an interview with Time in July 2023. “‘You’re taking a ‘real’ woman’s place,’ that’s the part of the argument that’s still extremely transphobic,” Rapinoe said. “I see trans women as real women. What you’re saying automatically in the argument—you’re sort of telling on yourself already—is you don’t believe these people are women. Therefore, they’re taking the other spot. I don’t feel that way.”

Rapinoe, 38, is a two-time women’s soccer World Cup champion and an Olympic gold and bronze medalist. She retired in 2023.
