Melania Trump blames media and Democrats for ‘toxic atmosphere’ after second assassination attempt

Former first lady Melania Trump offered praise for the Secret Service while criticizing Democrats and the media for “fueling a toxic atmosphere” that led to two assassination attempts on her husband.

Former President Donald Trump has had two assassination attempts against him in recent months, including an incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, in which he was shot in the ear during a rally and an attendee was killed, and an attempt by a man on the perimeter of his Florida golf course, which was thwarted by the Secret Service before the man could get within range of Donald Trump.

Melania Trump told Fox News’s Fox and Friends in an interview that aired Thursday that she was away from her husband for both assassination attempts, but she said the Secret Service was “great” in its response to the second attempt earlier this month.

“The guys that were with him, they were fantastic. And I think both of the events, they were really miracles if you really think about it,” Melania Trump said, adding that she believes “something” is watching over her husband.

“I think it’s almost like [the] country really needs him,” she added.

She also took aim at the media’s handling of the assassination attempts, specifically how coverage became “quiet,” and questioned the actions of the media and Democratic Party.

“I had a lot of questions. What’s going on? This is not normal. And is it really shocking that all this egregious violence goes against my husband? Especially that we hear the leaders from the opposition party and mainstream media branding him as a ‘threat to democracy,’ calling him vile names. They [are] only fueling a toxic atmosphere and giving power [to] all of these people that want to do harm to him,” she said.

“This needs to stop. This needs to stop. The country needs to unite,” Melania Trump added while encouraging people to read the letter she penned after the first assassination attempt against her husband.

Both assassination attempts on Donald Trump have led to various investigations and intense scrutiny of the Secret Service, specifically with the July 13 attempt on the former president’s life.

Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe announced last week that the agency’s internal review found that its job protecting Donald Trump during the Butler rally was a “mission failure” and that the failures “made clear” a “shift in paradigm in how we conduct our protective operations” is necessary.

Melania Trump, a famously private figure compared to her very public husband, has held few campaign events for her husband’s 2024 presidential campaign and did not speak at the Republican National Convention in July, but she made an appearance.

When asked during the Fox and Friends interview why she did not speak at the RNC earlier this year, Melania Trump said it was her decision and that she felt the letter she penned a day after the assassination attempt “in one way” was her speech for the convention.

“Let us not forget that differing opinions, policy, and political games are inferior to love,” Melania Trump noted in the July 14 letter. “Our personal, structural, and life commitment — until death — is at serious risk. Political concepts are simple when compared to us, human beings.”

The former first lady is releasing a memoir next month that she has said will include “stories and images never before shared with the public.” Her husband is vying for a second term in the White House in the Nov. 5 election, weeks after the book is released.
