Melania Trump says her husband holding people accountable will be ‘his decision’
Former first lady Melania Trump stated it will be up to her husband to decide, should he be elected president again, if he wants to use his political power to hold people accountable for the threats the couple have faced over the last few years.
Former President Donald Trump has indicated throughout his 2024 campaign that he could potentially seek retribution against his political opponents. Melania Trump was asked about her husband possibly holding people accountable for the escalation of political discourse within the country, as the last three months have seen two failed assassination attempts carried out against the former president.
“Well, that will be his decision,” Melania Trump said in an exclusive interview with Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo. “They have much more knowledge, what is going on behind the scene. So I don’t know what somebody did, didn’t do, but I think everybody should follow the law.”
Regarding what her role as first lady would look like in a second Trump presidency, the former first lady said she would resume work on her “Be Best” initiative that she started in her husband’s first term. She also confirmed that part of this initiative would be helping the “wellbeing” of women and children in the United States.
Melania Trump’s interview also detailed that her new memoir, Melania, ends with her recounting the first assassination attempt on her husband in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. The former president returned to the same location on Saturday for another rally, with Melania Trump calling her husband “a fighter” who would not let a shooter deter his work for the country.
“It’s still very hard to see it,” the former first lady said when recounting her husband’s assassination attempt. “And new videos comes out, new digital videos comes out, the way his head was positioned, what would happen if he would not turn his head. So, it’s very hard to watch.”
Last week, Melania Trump caused backlash when she released a video promoting her new book, during which she advocated for abortion access and individual freedom being “a fundamental principle” she supports. The former first lady reiterated this stance during her new interview, adding that she is not worried about her stance pushing voters away from her husband since “everybody needs to decide what they want to do.”
Donald Trump has defended his wife following the pushback her view on abortion has received, as he told her “you have to write what you believe.” The former president has also campaigned against a national abortion ban ahead of the 2024 election, the first presidential election since Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022.
