The National Archives will be hosting a naturalization ceremony this month on December 15th featuring former first lady Melania Trump.
The naturalization of more than twenty-two individuals will commemorate Bill of Rights Day, the Archives said in a press statement on Monday. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m.
“The ceremony, held in the historic National Archives Rotunda, will see 25 people from 25 nations sworn in as new U.S. citizens in front of the Constitution and our nation’s other founding documents,” the release said.
Archivist of the United States Colleen Shogan will also reportedly be giving a speech.
Melania Trump is a native of Slovenia and she is only the second first lady to be born outside of the United States.
“As a naturalized citizen herself, Mrs. Trump looks forward to telling her story and being part of this momentous occasion for these new American citizens,” Melania’s office said in a statement.
However, her involvement with the ceremony raised some eyebrows due to her husband’s legal issues with the government agency. For months, the National Archives has attempted to retrieve records that were kept at Mar-a-Lago, the Florida-based residence of former President Trump.
Following the confiscation of fifteen boxes of documents from Mar-a-Lago in January 2022, the Archives requested that the Justice Department (DOJ) look further into the former president’s management of records.
Later that year, the FBI executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago.
In the Mar-a-Lago case, the former president is accused of violating the Espionage Act by allegedly refusing to turn over sensitive documents from his administration and of obstructing justice by trying to hide them from the prosecutor.
May 20th is when Trump’s trial is scheduled to begin.
