Mexican officials put Berlin Wall slab near U.S. border to teach about walls.
Mexican Officials Install Remnant of Berlin Wall Near U.S. Southern Border
In a bold and thought-provoking move, Mexican officials recently installed a remnant of the Berlin Wall near the U.S. southern border. This symbolic gesture aims to teach a powerful lesson about the importance of breaking down walls and building bridges.
A Message of Advocacy
The historic concrete slab was placed next to the border wall in Tijuana, across from San Diego, with a message that seems to advocate for allowing more illegal immigrants refuge in the United States. This installation comes at a time when record numbers of families have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally, leading to concerns about what some critics are calling the “Biden Border Crisis.”
“May this be a lesson to build a society that knocks down walls and builds bridges,”
reads a plaque by the base of the Berlin Wall relic.
The Architects Behind the Installation
Montserrat Caballero, the mayor of Tijuana, Mexico, and Marcelo Ebrard, a former Mexican foreign secretary, are the two individuals behind the placement of the wall remnant. Caballero, in particular, penned the open-borders message that accompanies the installation.
A Symbolic Parallel
Los Angeles-based producer Marcos Cline-Marquez played a crucial role in bringing the 3-ton piece of the Berlin Wall to Friendship Park. He draws parallels between the Berlin Wall and the wall on the U.S. southern border, emphasizing that both walls were built to divide rather than protect. Caballero shares similar sentiments, acknowledging that while the social and political conflicts may differ, a wall is still a wall at the end of the day.
Despite these criticisms, Caballero does concede that the U.S. has the right to enforce its border. However, she argues that the border wall represents violence, family separation, and division.
The Reality of the Border Situation
As Mexican officials denounce the wall and some Americans advocate for open borders, the U.S. continues to face challenges at its southern border. In August alone, the U.S. arrested a record-high number of 91,000 illegal immigrants who crossed the border as families. Many of these individuals are released into the U.S. while awaiting court dates. The situation remains concerning, with 183,503 encounters with illegal immigrants reported in July.
Since President Biden took office, over 6.2 million illegal immigrant encounters have been recorded, resulting in the release of more than two million migrants into the U.S. This has raised concerns about increased crime rates, as highlighted by the Heritage Foundation.
Continued Construction
Despite signing an executive order to halt the construction of a new border wall, President Biden is overseeing the completion of small projects that were previously contracted out. This includes replacing sections of the border wall on the Tijuana-San Diego border.
It is worth noting that various pieces of the Berlin Wall have been placed in different locations worldwide, serving as reminders of the importance of unity and the consequences of division.
