The president of Mexico said doctors have confirmed he has passed the critical phase of his COVID-19 infection.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador made the announcement on Friday, adding he has still been instructed to rest despite improvement. Last week, he said he was being treated for mild symptoms of the virus after touring parts of Mexico.

The 67-year-old has had a history of heart problems and high blood pressure, making him high risk for COVID-19.

Obrador said Mexico plans to import almost 900 thousand doses of AstraZeneca’s vaccine in February.

“I still have COVID but the doctors tell me that I have passed the critical phase,” Lopez Obrador said. “I am now presenting myself to you so that there are no rumors or misunderstandings. I am well, although I still have to rest.”

Mexico has experienced a recent surge in cases, moving their status from low risk to moderate risk.
