Mexican president decries possible Trump indictment as ‘fabrication’
Mexican President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador disapproved of the rumored indictment of former President Donald Trump, labeling it as “fabrication” to prevent him from running in 2024.
López Obrador, who had clashed with Trump’s policies in the past, downplayed the allegations against Trump and argued that voters should decide whether he deserves a second term.
Speculations have circulated that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office is gearing up to bring charges against Trump over a hush money payment sent to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016.
The payment was allegedly made to keep Daniels silent about an affair she had with Trump. Prosecutors are reportedly mulling charges against Trump for falsifying business documents regarding a reimbursement scheme for the payment. A campaign finance violation charge is rumored to be added.
López Obrador drew parallels between Trump’s situation and prior criminal allegations lodged against him and urged that voters should be allowed to decide.
Despite Trump’s claims over the weekend that he would be arrested on Tuesday, an indictment has yet to be issued. The grand jury assigned to the case meets on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons.
If an indictment is issued, Trump will become the first former president in U.S. history to be indicted but not the first to be arrested.
