Mexico’s Former Top Law Enforcement Official Convicted Of Working For Notorious Sinaloa Drug Cartel
Genaro Garcia Luna, Mexico’s Former top law enforcement officer in charge of fighting the war against the nation’s notorious narco-terrorist organizations was found guilty in a U.S. federal Court on Tuesday for working with those organizations.
Garcia Luna, Secretary of Public Security who had direct control of Mexico’s Federal Police Force was convicted in Brooklyn of all charges of a superseding Indictment. This indictment charged Garcia Luna with continuing criminal enterprise, including six drug-related offenses, international cocaine distribution conspiracy and conspiracy to distribute and possess cocaine with intent to distribute, conspiracy to import cocaine and making false statements. In a statement. Garcia Luna is facing 20 years to life imprisonment.
Prosecutors established that Garcia Luna used his position to aid the most prominent and well-known drug cartel in the country, the Sinaloa cartel. Garcia Luna sold his country to the cartel for millions of dollars in cash payments. His actions in aiding the cartel included providing safe passage for drug shipments by the Cartel, sensitive law enforcement information regarding investigations into the Cartel, as well as helping the Cartel attack rival cartels. This helped facilitate the importation of large quantities of cocaine into the United States, according to the DOJ.
Garcia Luna was accused of being a narcotrafficker and testified against him at trial. Described Mexico’s equivalent of FBI. In exchange for Garcia Luna’s services, the narco-traffickers said that they had paid $14 million to Garcia Luna.
“Garcia Luna, who once stood at the pinnacle of law enforcement in Mexico, will now live the rest of his days having been revealed as a traitor to his country and to the honest members of law enforcement who risked their lives to dismantle drug cartels,” stated Breon Peace, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. “It is unconscionable that the defendant betrayed his duty as Secretary of Public Security by greedily accepting millions of dollars in bribe money that was stained by the blood of Cartel wars and drug-related battles in the streets of the United States and Mexico, in exchange for protecting those murderers and traffickers he was solemnly sworn to investigate.”
According to the report, one topic was rarely mentioned in trial: What U.S. officials knew regarding Garcia Luna’s criminal activities as he worked closely alongside U.S. officials including former Attorney General Eric Holder (and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton).
