Miami Beach Implements Curfew in Response to Deadly Shooting Incidents during Spring Break
The city of Miami Beach, Florida has declared a state of emergency and enforced a curfew in the aftermath of the two fatal shooting incidents that occurred during the weekend. One person was killed in each shooting on Friday and Sunday night respectively. The curfew, which took effect just before midnight on Sunday and lasted until 6 a.m. the following morning mostly impacted the South Beach area, a famous spring break spot, and is expected to be reinstated later this week from Thursday through next Monday.
According to a press release from the city, the curfew was enforced “in response to the two shootings and the excessively large and unruly crowds, and to mitigate dangerous and illegal conduct.”
Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber blamed the violence on outsiders who come to the city to vacation. While Gelber acknowledged that most visitors come to enjoy the amenities Miami Beach has to offer, he criticized the bad intentions and the presence of guns among a few that create a wholly intolerable situation. He reiterated that the city does not ask for spring break and does not want to host it. This latest incident marks the third year in a row that a curfew has been enforced during spring break in the city. Last year, the curfew was enforced after five people sustained injuries in gun-related violence.
The most recent shooting occurred around 11th Street and Ocean Drive. The victim was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead later. Police responded to the gunfire and arrested one suspect after a foot chase, and they also recovered two weapons. While police claim the shooting was targeted, they said no further clarification was available on the matter.
The aftermath of the incident was recorded on video and showed the victim lying in the street while onlookers took flight. In an earlier Friday night shooting incident that happened on Ocean Drive, one person was killed and another victim was injured, and a suspect arrested.
