Michael Gambon, renowned for his portrayal of Albus Dumbledore in the beloved “Harry Potter” films, has passed away at the age of 82.
The actor passed away on Wednesday after bravely battling pneumonia, according to his publicist, Clair Dobbs.
“We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael peacefully passed away in the hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus by his side, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82,” his publicist confirmed Thursday with Fox News Digital.
“We kindly request that you respect our privacy during this difficult time and we appreciate your messages of support and love,” she continued.
The British actor enjoyed a remarkable career spanning over six decades.
Gambon took on the role of Albus Dumbledore in the final six “Harry Potter” films after the untimely passing of his predecessor.
He was widely recognized as one of England’s most prominent leading actors.
Born in Ireland on October 19, 1940, Gambon was raised in London. Initially trained as an engineer, following in his father’s footsteps, he made his debut in the National Theatre Company’s production of “Hamlet” under the direction of Laurence Olivier.
Gambon gained acclaim for his leading role in John Dexter’s “Life of Galileo.”
Furthermore, he received the Laurence Olivier Award three times and the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards twice.
In 2015, he retired from stage acting due to difficulties remembering his lines in front of an audience, a heartbreaking decision for him. He continued to appear in several movies, with his final film being “Cordelia” in 2019.
The actor is survived by his wife Anne Miller, their son Fergus, and two sons from his previous marriage to set designer Philippa Hart.
