The Office of Barack and Michelle Obama has not provided a reason for her absence from the inauguration. Additionally, she recently missed the memorial service for former President Jimmy Carter.
Michelle Obama to skip Trump’s second inauguration on Jan. 20
Former first lady Michelle Obama will not be at President-elect Donald Trump‘s inauguration Monday, although former President Barack Obama is set to attend.
This marks the second time the former lady has skipped a high-profile event featuring the rest of the living former and current presidents, along with the former first ladies.
“Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration,” the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama said in a statement to the Washington Examiner.

The office did not say why Michelle Obama will not attend Trump’s swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol on Jan. 20.
The former first lady also skipped former President Jimmy Carter’s memorial service last week at the Washington National Cathedral due to a previous engagement in Hawaii.
At Carter’s memorial service, Barack Obama and Trump briefly shared a conversation and laughter, which went viral on social media.
“It did look very friendly, I must say,” Trump said later about the encounter.
Michelle Obama attended Trump’s first inauguration in January 2017 and afterward described the event as “emotional” while promoting Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast in 2023.
“That day was so emotional for so many different reasons,” Michelle Obama said at the time.
Both Obamas have increasingly ramped up their attacks against Trump as he unsuccessfully sought reelection in 2020 before roaring back to power by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris during the November election.
At the Democratic National Convention, Michelle Obama took aim at Trump over his past jabs against her family and Harris.
“His limited and narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, highly educated, successful people who happened to be black,” Michelle Obama said to loud applause. “Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those ‘black jobs’?”
DEMOCRATS WEIGH CHANGE IN STRATEGY TO AVOID MIDTERM AND 2028 DEFEATS
Barack Obama also slammed Trump during his prime-time speech at the DNC over the summer.
“This is a 78-year-old billionaire who hasn’t stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago,” Barack Obama said.
“It’s been a constant stream of gripes and grievances that’s actually gotten worse now that he’s afraid of losing to Kamala,” he continued. “The childish nicknames and crazy conspiracy theories and weird obsession with crowd size. It just goes on and on.”
Yet, Barack Obama and Trump appeared to be chummy during Carter’s memorial, a sign that the public war of words would not interfere with political diplomacy as Democrats give way for Trump and the GOP-controlled Congress to take power this month.
