Michigan Ads Promote Progressive Values to Attract Residents and Counter Population Decline.
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Effort to Attract Young Workers
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) has taken an innovative approach to address its declining population by investing $30,000 in digital advertisements. The goal is to draw left-leaning young workers to the Great Lakes State.
MEDC, a quasi-governmental organization, is dedicated to promoting Michigan’s strong image worldwide. Their mission statement emphasizes the importance of attracting new residents to the state.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, has been actively involved in setting the theme for the new ad campaign. In a recent social media post, she expressed a welcoming message to all individuals, regardless of their identity or whom they love.
“My message is simple. No matter how you identify or who you love, there is a home for you here,” she wrote.
In another post, Governor Whitmer highlighted Michigan’s commitment to defending fundamental rights and criticized states with discriminatory policies.
“If you’re looking for a state that respects your fundamental right to be yourself, come to Michigan,” she extended the invitation.
Targeting Progressive States
The digital ads have specifically targeted states such as Florida, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. These ads showcase Michigan’s progressive laws, pro-LGBT culture, and easy access to abortion, which stand in stark contrast to the more socially conservative policies of these states.
Response from Georgia Governor Brian Kemp
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, a Republican, expressed his disagreement with the tactics employed by the Whitmer administration. He emphasized Georgia’s population growth, low cost of living, thriving economy, and investments in healthcare, education, and public safety as factors that continue to attract Americans to his state.
Opposition and Future Plans
Michigan State Senator John Damoose, a Republican, voiced his opposition to the ad campaign, stating that it does not represent the views of all Michiganders. He strongly opposes the use of taxpayers’ dollars for such purposes.
MEDC officials have stated that the $30,000 expenditure is just the beginning of a larger advertising campaign aimed at reversing the population decline that is impacting Michigan’s economy.
The Need to Re-populate Michigan
A joint study by the non-profit Citizen Research Council of Michigan (CRCM) and Altarum, a quality-of-life research foundation, highlighted the negative consequences of Michigan’s declining population. The study revealed that the state lags behind in population growth, job opportunities, earnings, health, educational achievement, and the quality of public services.
From 2000 to 2020, Michigan’s population growth was one of the lowest among states, with only West Virginia faring worse. The study projected a net loss of over 270,000 people in the next 30 years due to more individuals leaving the state than moving in.
With young people leaving Michigan in search of better opportunities, urgent action is needed to reverse this trend and ensure a prosperous future for the state.
