Michigan Dem Announces Run For Retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s Seat
Rep. Elissa (D-MI), entered the 2024 Senate race hoping to challenge 72-year-old Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), said that she will not run for re-election next election.
Slotkin, a former CIA Analyst who is currently in Congress since 2019, won a close electoral victory in MichiganThe 7th district was redrawn in the 2022 midterms. After Stabenow’s announcement in January that she would be retiring at the end her term, the Michigan Democrat was among many names being considered for Senate nominations.
“Look, we all know America is going through something right now,” Slotkin made these remarks in Monday’s announcement video. “We seem to be living crisis to crisis, but there are certain things that should be really simple like living a middle-class life in the state that invented the middle class.”
Slotkin called for greater American manufacturing and the protection of children from what’s not “truly harming them.”
“This is why I’m running for the United States Senate. We need a new generation of leaders that thinks differently, works harder, and never forgets that we are public servants.”

Democrats will need to keep the open Senate seat in the purple states. The party must defend 23 out of 34 seats in 2024. CNN reported. Numerous high-profile Republicans and Democrats have been mentioned as possible candidates. Nikki Snyder (a Republican member of the State Board of Education) was the first to apply. Announce An announcement was made earlier in the month about a bid to fill the Senate seat. Slotkin is the first Democrat officially to announce a run.
Top of the Democratic list were Gretchen Whitmer, Democratic Governor, and Pete Buttigieg Secretary of Transportation. Rumored To run for Stabenow’s seat. However, both Whitmer & Buttigieg denied these rumors.
Tudor Dixon, the Republican nominee for the 2022 governorship, sparked speculation after she posted a thread of tweets on the “opportunity” Stabenow announced that the GOP will have a seat in the Senate in 2024. After Stabenow defeated GOP Sen. Spencer Abraham in his re-election bid, Michigan Republicans haven’t held a Senate Seat since 2001.

Another high-profile candidate is Rep. John James (R.MI), who is rumored be running for the seat. James, a U.S. Army Veteran, ran against Stabenow for the seat in 2018. He lost by 6.5 percentage points. He ran again two years later for a Senate seat against Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. That election was lost by less than 2 percentage points. In 2022, he won a general election and was elected U.S. Representative for Michigan’s 10th House.
