Michigan Democrat laments party won’t change ‘rhetoric that lost them the race’
Michigan Democratic state Rep. Karen Whitsett said she would not caucus with her party because it continues to use the “same rhetoric that lost them the race.”
Whitsett is the latest state lawmaker to drift apart from the Democratic Party. State Rep. Hillary Cassel of Florida switched to the Republican Party after Rep. Susan Valdes did so earlier this year. The Michigan lawmaker will remain a Democrat, however.
“I’m not going to caucus with them because of their talking points and the fact that they are disconnected,” Whitsett said Thursday on Fox News’s The Faulkner Focus. “They’re still using the same rhetoric that lost them the race. I know how to read a bill. So I don’t need someone to tell me how to vote. Clearly, they have messed up the whole entire voting system as it is, so why would I do that? I’m better off just being by myself, read my bills, and get things done for my district.”
Whitsett said President-elect Donald Trump helped her raise over $840,000 for her campaign. She ran unopposed in the 2024 general election. Open Secrets reported that Whitsett fundraised just over $86,000 for this latest race.
Trump flipped Michigan in 2024 after the state elected President Joe Biden in 2020. The president-elect did particularly well in Detroit, where Whitsett’s district is.
The Democratic Party is in the minority in the Michigan House, with 52 seats in a 110-seat chamber.
