Michigan town opposes Chinese company’s plan to construct huge EV factory in the US.
A Small Michigan Township Takes a Stand Against Electric Vehicle Battery Plant
A small township in Michigan is making headlines as it fights against the opening of a new electric vehicle battery plant. The township, known as Green Charter Township, has raised concerns about the parent company’s reported ties to China.
Despite these concerns, local officials recently gave the proposal the green light. However, residents are not backing down and have been vocal in their objections to the construction of the $2.4 billion facility by Gotion Inc.
One of the main concerns raised by residents is the plant’s close proximity to a U.S. military base. The Michigan Army National Guard base is just minutes away from the proposed site, causing disbelief among many.
When federal officials claimed they did not have jurisdiction to review the construction, local elected leaders stepped in to address the issue. They called on Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the state Senate to intervene and put a stop to the plant’s construction.
In response to the concerns raised by the community, Gotion Inc. released a statement reassuring the locals. The company emphasized that it will continue to listen to the statements from the Green Charter Township community as they move forward with the construction of the factory, which is expected to create around 2,000 jobs.
