Michigan vs. Ohio State: An Epic Showdown
Growing up in south Georgia, my biggest dream was to play college football. I wanted to experience the thrill of competing in a packed stadium on a Saturday afternoon, with the sounds of the marching band reverberating like thunder. Little did I know that this dream would take me a thousand miles away from home. But when the University of Michigan offered me the chance to join their brotherhood, I eagerly accepted, despite being the son of a Columbus, Ohio native.
The years that followed were a whirlwind of challenges and triumphs, as any worthwhile endeavor should be. I was there for Coach Bo Schembechler’s final speech the night before he passed away. I stood on the field for Coach Lloyd Carr’s last game before retirement. I even had the opportunity to meet presidents and movie stars. And all of this came at a cost - I had to sacrifice everything.
This week, hundreds of young men across America will run through tunnels to play their final football games. They will compete for coveted trophies like the Apple Cup, the Golden Egg, and the Wooden Boot. In the span of three hours, some dreams will come true while others will be shattered. Hearts will break, and bones may be broken. But that’s the price these athletes pay for a chance at greatness.
For a few hours, sports will showcase the best of America, rather than the worst. Football will instill the values we need in young men today. And during those precious hours, when the game kicks off, it should serve as a welcome reprieve from the usual Thanksgiving arguments over politics and current affairs.
This season, the Wolverines and Buckeyes will face each other as undefeated foes for the second year in a row. It’s a historic moment in the century-long rivalry between these two teams. And to add even more excitement, both programs are ranked in the top five for the third consecutive year. The stakes couldn’t be higher. However, Michigan will be without their head coach, Jim Harbaugh, who is serving a three-game suspension for in-person scouting violations.
Coach Harbaugh’s name has been constantly in the media over the past four weeks, with allegations of cheating and speculation about his future at Michigan. But despite these distractions, the players on both teams remain focused on the showdown ahead. Everything is on the line – a division title, a conference championship berth, playoff aspirations, and most importantly, bragging rights for the next year.
A win for Michigan would mean a three-game winning streak against the Buckeyes, the longest since 1997. On the other hand, if the Buckeyes prevail, they will have won 16 out of the last 20 matchups in “The Game.”
As we gather to watch football this Thanksgiving holiday, let’s remember to never take the game for granted. There’s no guarantee that future generations will care to preserve the sport as we have. The landscape of football is constantly changing, and it’s uncertain if any generation can navigate it successfully.
To those fortunate enough to compete this weekend, remember that what you do on the field, win or lose, will leave a lasting impact. Embrace the pressure of high expectations and leave a legacy. There is no greater privilege than the opportunity to rise to the challenge.

How does the author believe that football unites people and instills important values
On, as I sit in my living room, I can’t help but reflect on my own journey and the sacrifices I made to achieve my dream. Growing up in south Georgia, football was more than just a game; it was a way of life. The whole community would gather at the local high school stadium on Friday nights, cheering on our beloved team. It was in those moments that I knew I wanted to pursue football at a higher level.
As a young boy, I used to watch college football games on TV with wide-eyed wonder. The energy and passion displayed by the players and the roaring crowds fueled my ambition. I yearned to experience the thrill of running out onto a field, with thousands of fans cheering me on.
When the University of Michigan offered me a football scholarship, it felt like all my dreams were coming true. However, it also meant leaving behind my family and the comfort of home. It was a difficult decision, but I knew that opportunities like this don’t come around often.
The years I spent at the University of Michigan were some of the most challenging and rewarding of my life. I trained relentlessly, pushing my limits both physically and mentally. The camaraderie among my teammates was unparalleled, and together we faced countless battles on the football field.
I remember the emotional night before Coach Bo Schembechler passed away. His final speech to us still echoes in my mind, reminding me of the legacy I was a part of. I stood on the field for Coach Lloyd Carr’s last game before retirement, feeling the weight of the years of tradition and excellence.
Playing college football also gave me opportunities beyond the field. I had the privilege of meeting presidents and movie stars, experiences I never thought possible. However, it all came at a cost. I sacrificed time with my family, missed out on important memories, and pushed my body to its limits.
Now, as I watch the next generation of football players prepare to play their final games, I am filled with a mixture of nostalgia and gratitude. These young men will face the same challenges and sacrifices I did, but they will also experience the joy and camaraderie that comes with being a part of a team.
Football has a way of bringing out the best in people. It instills important values like discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. It teaches young men the importance of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. In a world filled with uncertainty and division, football offers a temporary escape, a chance to come together and celebrate the spirit of competition.
As Thanksgiving approaches, I am reminded of the power of sports to unite us. When the game kicks off, the usual arguments over politics and current affairs take a backseat. For a few hours, families gather around the TV, cheering for their favorite team, sharing in the excitement of the game.
So, as young men across America prepare to take the field for their final games, I applaud their dedication and sacrifice. Their pursuit of greatness inspires us all. They embody the best of America, and they deserve our support and admiration.
This football season, let’s appreciate the passion and dedication these athletes bring to the field. Let’s remember the sacrifices they make for the love of the game. And let’s use this time to come together as a nation, celebrating the values that football instills in all of us - hard work, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence.
