Meet Migrants at the Southern border Multiple Customs and Border Protection (CBP), sources say that they have already crossed the one million mark for Fiscal year 2023. This is an extraordinary pace for encounters.
On Friday, there were 1,008,217 migrant encounters on the border for the fiscal, which began in October. The majority of those encountered were single adults, at 87.8%. Just 328,454 were expelled under Title 42 — the pandemic-era protocol that allows border agents to rapidly expel border crossers.
Over 1.7 million encounters were recorded in FY 2021. FY 2022 saw more than 2.3million. The first six months of FY 2023 have seen more encounters than the preceding fiscal year. This time last year, numbers for FY22 through March 1 were 839,819 — well under the 1 million mark.

The administration of Biden has noted a sharp decline in the number of encounters from December’s historic peak of 251,000 to just over 156,000 in January, despite the high number. While that figure is the highest on record for the month of January, officials still linked the drop to a number of measures rolled out by the administration last month — including a humanitarian parole program that allows 30,000 migrants from four nationalities into the U.S. each month.
Fox has been told by CBP sources that February’s preliminary numbers indicate that encounters are declining again. They could fall to around 150,000 or less once all numbers have been accounted for. Last February saw 166,000 migrant encounters.
Agents are concerned about the possibility of a record breaking spring if the numbers rise again, which is often the case.
“Agents know leadership throughout the agency and the administration will celebrate two months of lower numbers instead of acknowledging the daunting task of being tasked at the border with yet another historical and preventable situation,” Fox News was informed by an agent.
