Migrants abandon visas and IDs in trash after illegal crossing.
Migrants Dumping Identification Papers in Trash After Crossing U.S.-Mexico Border
Reports have emerged that migrants are dumping identification papers, including Mexican humanitarian visas, in a sea of trash after illegally crossing the border into the United States. Fox News reporter Bill Melugin shared drone footage showing trash scattered over a wide area along the American side of the border, with visas and other identification papers among the debris.
Stunning Footage Shows the Extent of the Problem
Melugin tweeted the footage, saying, “Mixed in, you will find IDs/paperwork from around the world, & Mexican humanitarian visas.” The video shows an enormous amount of clothing and trash dumped by migrants at the edge of the river after they cross illegally into Brownsville.
Melugin joined “America’s Newsroom” anchor Bill Hemmer to discuss the footage and the imminent end of Title 42, which allowed Border Patrol to turn migrants away based on public health concerns related to the COVID pandemic.
Identification Papers Left Behind Make It Easier to Determine Asylum Eligibility
Melugin noted that in addition to wet clothes and other trash, a number of the migrants had left behind Mexican humanitarian visas and other identifying documents. These documents would make it easier for American officials to effectively determine who truly qualified for asylum in the U.S. or where migrants should be deported to if they were not allowed to stay.
“Mixed in with all that clothing and trash are also IDs from all around the world, paperwork from around the world, and Mexican humanitarian visas,” Melugin said. “Remember, before they get to our border, they’ve got to get into Mexico first. And Mexico mass-issues them humanitarian visas, allows them to travel through Mexico, they go right to the border with the U.S., and once they cross over, they dump everything.”
Dozens of Similar Dump Points Along the Rio Grande Valley
Melugin also revealed that there were dozens of similar dump points along the Rio Grande Valley just like the one seen in his team’s footage. The problem of migrants dumping identification papers and other debris is a growing concern for U.S. officials as they struggle to manage the influx of migrants crossing the border.
