Mike Johnson says Democratic Party lost Hispanic voters when it ‘abandoned’ values – Washington Examiner
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) remarked that the Democratic Party has lost support from Hispanic voters due to a perceived abandonment of shared values. Speaking alongside former President Donald Trump during a campaign tour across 260 cities in 40 states, Johnson expressed confidence in a significant demographic shift. He noted an influx of new participants at events, emphasizing that Hispanic and Latino voters recognize the Democrats’ failure to uphold community values, particularly regarding border policies. Johnson believes this election cycle will see historic support for his party from these communities.
Mike Johnson says Democratic Party lost Hispanic voters when it ‘abandoned’ values
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) said he has seen Hispanic voters leave the Democratic Party over the “values” it has come to espouse.
Johnson joined former President Donald Trump on the campaign trail, visiting 260 cities in 40 states ahead of Election Day. The speaker has long predicted a “demographic shift” toward his candidate as a result of his tour and detailed the reasoning behind his prediction to Rachel Campos-Duffy of Fox and Friends on Tuesday.
“So there are people coming to the events, Rachel, that have never been there before. And I think the Hispanic and Latino vote is going to be historic this time,” Johnson said. “I think they’re coming our way because they see the Democratic Party has abandoned the values of the community. And they’ve opened the border wide, and that frustrates that community as much as anybody. I think this is going to be a big one. We are going to make history here.”
The border crisis has been correlated with an increase in fentanyl presence in the country. Johnson said that fentanyl, as the leading cause of death for those aged 18 to 49, has propelled the border to a top issue for voters.
Hispanic support for the Democratic Party has dwindled with each election cycle. Former President Barack Obama received 67% of the Hispanic vote in 2012, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton garnered 66%, and President Joe Biden received 59%.
In 2020, Latino voters made up 13.6% of all eligible voters. They are expected to make up over 14% in 2024, according to the Pew Research Center.
