Mike Waltz predicts Trump will win Nobel Prize for Ukraine peace talks

NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland — National security adviser Mike Waltz predicted his boss would win the Nobel Peace Prize as President Donald Trump tries to negotiate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.

“So under Trump, this war will end, and it will end soon, and he is the president of peace,” Waltz said at the Conservative Political Action Conference. “This is the presidency of peace. He’s going to end the war in Europe. He is going to end the wars in the Middle East.”

“And you know what? By the end of this all, we’re going to have the Nobel Prize sitting next to the name of Donald J. Trump,” Waltz added as the crowd clapped in approval.

Trump has long indicated his desire to win the coveted prize. Earlier this month, he declared that “they will never give me a Nobel Peace Prize,” although he also said he deserves it.

Waltz recently returned from a trip to Saudi Arabia along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff, where a U.S. delegation met with the Russians to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

Waltz downplayed criticisms from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European nations that they were being cut out of the negotiations.

“You can’t end the war if you don’t talk to both sides, and that’s what we’re doing,” Waltz said about the discussions.

Trump invited bipartisan blowback this week when he blamed Zelensky for Russia invading Ukraine roughly three years ago and criticized Zelensky’s approval ratings. The president also branded the Ukrainian leader a “dictator” as tensions have flared between the two men.

Waltz did not comment on Trump’s statements during his Friday appearance at CPAC and has sidestepped questions about it.

Like Trump, Waltz said NATO allies must increase their financial contributions to support Ukraine.

“As of now, a third of our NATO allies still are not contributing the minimum, which is 2% of their GDP that they committed to … 10 years ago. So that’s unacceptable,” said Waltz. “And if you know what, the Europeans want to take a bigger role in their own security, that falls in line with American First principles, as far as I’m concerned, as far as President Trump’s concerned. So you know what? He’s got to rattle their cage a bit.”

He also said Ukraine would ultimately agree to end the war.

“Here’s the bottom line: President Zelensky is going to sign that deal, and you will see that in the very short term,” Waltz said.
