Newly elected president Javier Milei’s future foreign minister stated that Argentina has decided not to join the BRICS group of developing nations in the upcoming year.
Diana Mondino, who Milei picked as his foreign minister once he is sworn into office on December 10th, wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, that they “will not join BRICS.”
BRICS is an intergovernmental organization and Argentina was one of six nations invited in August to become part of the 11-nation bloc that already included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
During his campaign trail, libertarian Milei sharply criticized China and hinted at severing diplomatic ties with the nation, declaring in an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, “[he is] not going to do business with any communist.”
Modino stated that BRICS “is more related to a political alignment than to advantages that could exist for trade between countries.”
“We already have diplomatic and trade relations with most of them,” she continued.
Argentina was scheduled to join the organization on January 1st, 2024.
During his campaign, Milei, who is an admirer of former President Donald Trump, repeatedly stated that if he were to win “[his] allies would be the United States and Israel.”

What factors influenced Argentina’s decision not to join the BRICS group of nations?
Newly Elected President of Argentina Javier Milei Decides Not to Join BRICS
Argentinian President-elect Javier Milei’s future Foreign Minister, Diana Mondino, recently announced that Argentina has made the decision to not join the BRICS group of developing nations in the upcoming year. This declaration comes as a surprise to many, as Argentina was invited to join the 11-nation bloc that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
BRICS, an intergovernmental organization, aims to promote trade and economic cooperation among its member nations. With Argentina’s booming agricultural industry and potential for increased trade, joining BRICS could have been seen as an opportunity for economic growth and development. However, Milei’s administration has decided against it.
During his campaign, Milei voiced his concerns about China and expressed his intention to sever diplomatic ties with the nation. In an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, he openly criticized China, stating that he would not engage in any business dealings with a communist regime. This stance against China aligns with Milei’s libertarian principles and his emphasis on individual freedom and limited government interference.
Mondino further explained Argentina’s decision not to join BRICS, stating that the alliance is primarily a political alignment rather than a trade agreement. She emphasized that Argentina’s focus will be on exploring trade opportunities with countries that offer the most advantages for the nation’s economy. By opting out of BRICS, the Milei administration aims to prioritize trade agreements that are mutually beneficial and aligned with Argentina’s interests.
Argentina’s choice not to join BRICS raises questions about the direction of its foreign policy and its future diplomatic relations. As the country transitions into Milei’s presidency on December 10th, the international community will closely monitor Argentina’s approach to global affairs.
In a world where international alliances and partnerships play a significant role in shaping economic and political landscapes, Argentina’s decision not to join BRICS marks a departure from traditional diplomatic paths. Only time will tell how this decision will impact Argentina’s economy and its role in the global arena.
