‘Mind Your Business’: Lizzo Calls Texas Abortion Ban ‘Atrocious,’ Says ‘Trans Rights Are Human Rights’
Lizzo has made her stance on a few key social issues clear. The 33-year-old rap artist made an impassioned speech on stage at SXSW declaring her support for abortion and the rights of children to choose their own gender, according to The Washington Post.
“I’m proud to rep Houston, but I’m not proud to rep Texas politics right now,” Lizzo said to a cheering crowd. “Mind your business,” she continued. “Trans rights are human rights.”
The Grammy Award winner didn’t stop there. She went on to denounce Texas’s SB 8, which bans almost all abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected at around six weeks of pregnancy. The law goes one step further by not making exceptions for abortions in cases of rape and incest and only permits abortions when the life of the mother is at stake or the pregnancy could cause “substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function.”
“The abortion ban is atrocious,” Lizzo continued during her speech. “Mind your business. Stay out of my body. This is not political.” She also claimed conservative politicians were “all up in her uterus.”
That wasn’t all. When it came to trans issues, Lizzo responded to Texas Governor Gregg Abbot requesting that private citizens report families that appear to be supporting children undergoing “elective procedures for gender transitioning.” The governor also called on the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) to investigate certain “so-called ‘sex change’ procedures” found to “constitute child abuse under existing Texas law.”
The “Truth Hurts” singer was not on board with restricting gender transitioning for children.
“They’re taking away the right for young children to have a chance to live authentically as themselves,” Lizzo said. “It’s a violation of human rights. Trans rights are human rights.”
“We got a lot of other things that we need,” she continued. “There are people in charge who can change things on a systemic level and they’re letting us down.”
Lizzo performed at SXSW in part to promote her new unscripted reality competition series, “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls,” which is scheduled to debut on Amazon March 25. The singer also addressed how she’s proud of her plus-sized body and is hoping to encourage others to feel the same about theirs.
“I used to get called fat a** every single day on the bus,” she told the crowd. “They don’t set us up to see our value and our worth especially as black women, especially as big black women.”
“I want to lift these women up… I hope they all become superstars after this,” she said of the contestants on the reality show.
This isn’t the first time Lizzo spoke on these controversial social issues. During the 2019 Sacramento Pride festival, the singer posted a video to her Instagram that included the caption: “I want to take a second to say that Black lives matter. Trans lives matter. And if we’re going to celebrate Pride, then we need to keep that energy 365.”
